I purchased a brand new, "new in unopened box" Canon 40d from this company on eBay. It seemed like a good deal at the time; it was cheaper than most other places, and came with a nameless lens and some key accessories that I would have needed to buy either way. It was weird that they did not accept PayPal, which is almost a standard for eBay, but I shook it off thinking that they were a legitimate company who wanted to use their own credit card machine. I did a buy it now', and paid quickly.

They advertised that the order would be shipped within 24 hours of the order being processed and since I ordered around noon, I assumed that they could get the package out within a reasonable amount of time (basically, later that day since payment was cleared instantly). They did not get the order out that day, and claimed that due to religious reasons, they were closed on the following two days, Thursday and Friday (more like took a long weekend). The package finally went out late on the following Monday and took a reasonable amount of time to arrive, but that was due to UPS, not the company.

When I received the package, I immediately knew something was wrong. The different parts that came with the kit were placed into a box that wasn't big enough to fit them all. When I opened the outer box, I found that the CAMERA BOX was holding the stress of the package if anything bumped into my box, the camera would take the hit. I began to open everything carefully, fearing that the company would blame damage on me. I found that the overall condition was acceptable, the box had a few dents and pressure marks from the shipping which concerned me. I closely examined the camera box. Having owned multiple Canon products before, I knew immediately when I opened the box that something was missing. Canon packs their boxes very neatly, everything has its place and this box had clearly been jostled through and there was definitely something missing. I noticed then that the box that it came in was the 40D + IS 28-135mm KIT, which included a lens, but there was no lens in the box that I received (so much for an unopened box). I called them up to note this fact and they admitted that even though they advertise that it's an unopened box, they actually buy bigger kits, and break them apart to up sell the parts for additional money. They tried to bribe me with a free battery (20$?) to make up for my unhappiness and I said I would have to call them back.

I called Canon, who took me through their screening to see if it was a genuine brand new Canon product and it basically turned out that because it did not have a USA Warranty Card (or any warranty for that matter), they couldn't tell me that it was an actual Canon. They informed me that I should probably return the item as it did not have a warranty and that Canon replacements and repair was rather expensive.

I called JerseyPhoto again to explain this and to see if they could send me what I had originally wanted (a brand new camera with a USA warranty), and they basically said that they gave up on trying with me and that they wanted me to return the item so that they could stop having to deal with me as an unhappy customer. I returned the item, which was also a huge process since I didn't want to ship it back in the same box in case it got damaged during delivery, so I asked them to send me another box to ship it in that would fit the camera properly. Well, the new box was EVEN SMALLER than the original one and I had to cram everything into it. I sent it back, and they received it around 9:00 AM and didn't even open it until the next business day, wherein they insisted that I cancel the transaction on eBay so that they could refund my money.

This has been a horrible experience dealing with this company.

I also want to describe more about what came with the package. LOOK AT THEIR PRICES, they advertise that their accessories account for over half of the cost of the package (which means that the camera body itself only costs about $350 in their eyes). The accessories that they sent were CRAP and were nothing like what was pictured. The tripod was extremely flimsy and probably wouldn't even support the nice camera that I had bought. It came with a Tamron lens that they claimed costs 150$ but was found at other stores for a mere 50$. The CF card was from a no-name company, and barely had a warranty (most come with a lifetime warranty), and it was rated as very slow. The reader was junk, flimsy, and wouldn't last in travel (although it had been marketed as a portable model). The bag was tiny, and had no padding whatsoever. The wide angle and telephoto lenses were the worst quality and one of them came clearly used as it had DUST AND FINGERPRINTS on the glass! The "mini table top tripod" was about 2" tall and came in a package with small amounts of cleaning supplies, advertised separately. On top of all of this NOTHING LOOKED LIKE THE PICTURES IN THE LISTING THAT SHOWED QUALITY EQUIPMENT.

I decided that I would have to throw out most of the junk equipment so I sent everything back, ordered from another seller who gave me a USA warranty (and it even cost less) and ordered quality accessories separately that I will actually use.

I also wanted to draw some attention to a paper that came with the original package that said, "If you leave good feedback and 5 stars for each of the 4 ratings, we will send you a free gift!" Seriously? Bribery for positive feedback on eBay? That can't be legal. I have reported this seller to eBay and hopefully they will take action against this "power seller". The company should not have the power seller rating if they are ripping customers off like this.

Don't get suckered like I did. I wasted 3 weeks with this company and felt like they had complete control over the situation. Spend the money on accessories that you actually want, it will make you much happierdon't deal with this junk company. If you are considering jersey photo for your camera purchase, choose another company and avoid getting conned.

Supporting Evidence from research

I was looking at prices all around the internet for new DSLR cameras. I recently stumbled upon Fumfie.com and saw that they had amazing prices for pretty much every major brand of DSLR. They say they are a Jersey-based company that went to the WWW to expand. I read some of the customer testimonials that they had on their site and they seemed too good to be true.

Like this one:

Ordered a Sony Cybershot 9.1 megapixel. They didn't have the exact model that I ordered, so they gave me a higher model for the same price. Great service, prompt shipment, good products. I would definitely order from fumfie again.

http://donwiss.com/pictures/brooklynstores/h0071.htm has some interesting information regarding the entity that is JerseyPhoto/Fumfie.com.

Respone to other customer response

AUTHOR: Anonymous - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, June 14, 2009

they dont want to directly respond to the problem at hand becasue they do this for EVERY ORDER and they admitted it on the phone. they buy greymarket camera kits, break them down, sell them as new and unopened to unknowing customers and then make more profit.

some of the lenses that came with the kit had FINGERPRINTS and dust on them despite the fact that they were "brand new and never opened"

Their 10,000 or whatever happy customers doesnt mean anything. No offense to these customers, but they probably didnt know what they were really getting becasue they didnt look closely at it. Also, they might not know the difference between good and bad accessories of which none of the accessories were good that came with the kit. Most of the positive reviews said things like "great camera" which obvisouly if you buy a canon or a nikon etc. your getting a great camera, but they didnt know it was greymarket or that there was no warranty so their rating means nothing

To Jerseyphoto: respond to the issue at hand. the point of this report isnt to ensure a refund, its to warn people of the scam that you setup and why they should avoid it. Respond to why you dont provide the quality accessories that are listed in your ebay listings, why you give open items as new and unopened and why fingerprints would ever be found on a brand new lens. and stop trying to bash other companies like Apple and Nike. I have always ordered apple products and they have never once messed up my order. do your job right or face the consequences

I'd be interested in knowing exactly why the filer of this report recieved a grey market camera and cheap accessories when that is not what he ordered.

Response to Unsatisfied Customer

AUTHOR: Jerseyphoto - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, June 01, 2009

As a longtime employee of Jersey Photo, I am greatly disturbed by this "ripoff-report." Before responding directly to this report, I'd like to note that Jersey Photo has over 100,000 satisfied customers. Out of all our customers, a fraction of one percent of our customers encounter a problem. Although this is such a great minority of our customers, we still get distressed over every single customer that is not wholly satisfied. Therefore, Jersey Photo does everything in its power to leave every customer happy that they purchased something from Jersey Photo.
Unfortunatley, due to the fact that Jersey Photo serves so many consumers, it is inevitable that mistakes do sometimes occur. This does not only apply to Jersey Photo, but any major corporation or powerseller one can think of, such as Apple or Nike. Being that we are a powerseller, we do admit that mistakes could have occured with specific orders. However, we do guarantee that all of our products are 100% brand new and we always offer to everyone, including this gentleman, a full return policy.

Regards,
Bob Mayer
Jersey Photo Employee
