After enrolling in Kaplan for my BA in paralegal, I decided to look for them on the web to see if I could find out more about them and I found a lot of bad press. I then called my admissions rep Greg Rounds to voice my concern. He asked where I got my information from and I told him RipOff Report. He then went on to tell me how the people posting to RipOff Report where people who didn't do what they were supposed to do and that they were the ones at fault for their problems at Kaplan. It was as if he was reading from a script. I then said ok and told him that I would investigate the matter further. I found many more sites with the same "shady" stories about Kaplan.

I then called back and spoke with Greg Rounds and explained to him that I had found many sites and law suits that involved Kaplan. I then asked him to unenroll me. He asked if I would send him an email stating that I no longer wished to be enrolled in Kaplan and he would take care of the rest. That was on Feb. 5, 2009. I thought it was over and I had gotten away from Kaplan with only losing the application fee of $45.00.
Last week I received an email from a Lauren Eldridge about my classes. I forwarded the email that I sent to Greg Rounds about un-enrolling and asked that I be contacted if this had not been done.
Yesterday I received an email telling me that my books were being shipped UPS. I then called and Greg Rounds and Lauren Eldridge were not taking calls. I was able to talk to a girl in financial aid. She said that she would make a note on my financial aid that I was not going to be attending and for me to just refuse the books. That would be fine except I am not home during the day because thats when I work and I live in a resort community and all UPS/FED-EX packages requiring signatures are taken to the hotel where they are signed for out of courtesy and packages can be picked up from there. I tried explaining this to the girl, but she acted like I was lying. Any ways I then emailed Greg Rounds and Lauren Eldridge trying to find out why I was being sent books. The only one who replied to my email was Lauren Eldridge and the email she sent back was a joke. It said: "I assume you are still not planning on attending. Please reject this package when it arrives.Thanks".

Ok, which part of I want to be un-enrolled wasn't clear. I am beginning to feel as if I signed a contract with the devil. These people are a joke and so is the school. I went to the hotel this morning and asked for them to reject any packages that come for me. I can only hope that my Kaplan experience will be over soon, but I have a feeling there will be more problems.

I would like to thank all of you that took the time to write about your own experience with Kaplan. This kept me from making the same mistake

What these people aren't telling you is that you need to do an exit interview to be considered un-enrolled. Call up don't bother trying to put in any ones extention, when you get a hold of the help desk tell them you want to speak with a supervisor that deals with enrollments for the paralegal program. Tell the supervisor what is going on, give them names and tell them you want to un-enroll and you want the exit interview.

Greg was suppose to send you an email telling you, you had to contact 3 different departments. Plus you can refuse the books. When they arrive call up UPS/FEDex and tell them to pick them back up you are refusing the delivery. Do not open the boxes Kaplan may tell you to do this but don't. There is no valid book return information enclosed and of course once the package is opened the books are considered used. Also, no matter what do not log on to your Kaplan account and do not click on any of the course titles! If you do Kaplan will charge you for each log in. They tell you they don't but they lie. If they ask you to do that, refuse tell them no.

File a complaint with the better business bureau and if you took out student loans keep an eye on your account. Kaplan will not report you as un-enrolled and they will steal money from your student loan account. If they do this file a complaint with the loan holder and fasa. When you speak to the who ever for your exit interview tell them if Kaplan takes any money from your student loan, tries to bill you for classes or books you will contact your attorney general's a lawyer and you will contact a consumer advocate. You may want to look up consumer demand letter and if they can be used in the state you are in.

If there is a consumer advocate in your state like an investigative reporter tied to a news station contact them and tell them about Kaplan.

It took almost 2 months but after I filed a complaint with the better business bureau, complaints with the loan holder and fasa, contacted a consumer advocate and threatened with contacting the attorney general plus a lawyer. Kaplan acknowledged I was un-enrolled, accepted the return of my books and they returned the money they stole from my student loan account.

My Kaplan update as of 2-26-09

AUTHOR: Jerry - (U.S.A.)

So, I'm driving on 2/24/09 and I get a call from this lady from Kaplan, telling me that she is sorry that I decided not to attend Kaplan and she went on about what a great school it was and that she looked in my records and found that Lauren Eldridge was the one who submitted my request to withdraw, not Greg Rounds. And that she is sorry for what happened and that no one else from Kaplan would be contacting me. Today 2/26/09 I received two calls 1 on cell the other on my house phone. This was some guy telling me he was calling to find out what was going on with me????? and that Greg Rounds had been promoted and he had taken his place. Ok why are they still calling me and how did this Greg Rounds guy get promoted???? Oh, and I am still getting emails about the books I refused. Is this ever really going to end?
