I had the flu and went to the emergency room. They kept me against my will. I was there only for one day as I got mad and walked out without them knowing. I later recieved a bill for $4,148.89 with no explaination of the charges

ACTUALLY, A PATIENT CAN BE HELD INVOLUNTARILY

AUTHOR: Sherri - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, April 30, 2005

If the patient is felt to be a danger to him/herself or others or felt to have a psychiatric emergency, then he/she CAN be held on a 72-hour psych hold. There is far more to this story than the original poster is telling. Working as a Nurse Practitioner in a busy Emergency Department, I can assure you that a patient would not be held for just a case of the flu; in fact, we discourage people coming to the ER for flu-like symptoms, as there is actually very little we can do for that other than give Tylenol and fluids in cases of dehydration.

Better yet stay home when you have the flu.
