I was sales employee at LA Fitness in both Cape Coral and Bonita Springs, Florida. I was bullied , yelled at , grabbed, and , not too mention had deal after deal stolen from me by my managers.

Had to work 6 days a week, 10 hour days and holidays and still could not make a living as I spent time marketing while managers sat in the office and took your leads. Attempts to remedy any of this were ignored and scoffed at by VP's as well as Human Resources in California.

I could write a book about the injustices done to me and fellow employees and have at least 10 people in this area who would stand up and fight. Very interested in responses from past , present employees who are tired of being bullied and stolen from. thanks.

#4 UPDATE EX-employee responds

they make promises they can't keep

I worked in Personal Training Sales for LAFitness and was told I would be making 60,000/year and be management with full benefits with in 6 months.  What I found is that you can only make decent money if you are at a BRAND NEW CLUB.  They hire FAR more people than the market can support.  We had 6 sales people and 2 managers.  NONE of the sales people were making more than  $300/week.  And some of those had been in the gym industry for over a decade.  The managers were stealing deals from us right and left.  We were working our butts off on the floor and spending hours on the phone 6 days a week  I finally spoke to my old boss and got my old job back.  I put in notice, but after a few days the manager told me not to come back. This company is a joke.  If your turn over rate is as high as LA Fitness, it's NOT the employees, it's the management.

Sometimes you should take personal accountability

Well there are only 2 sales employees whom have worked at Bonita and Cape Coral. One still is employeed and the other could not sell a cars in his previous job and most certainly not gym memberships. Maybe someone had sympathy for you and gave you a job, and even kept you on staff a lot longer then you should have been cause people were nice to you. You probably learned more working at LA Fitness then you did at any other learning instituation in your life. Since you are so eager to blame the company for your failures, are you working again or trying to collect unemployment? If you were any good at sales you should have been scooped up by any employer that is looking for people that can make them money. Instead...Its LA Fitness's fault!

Worst Employer Ever!!

I worked at an LA Fitness as a Sales Counselor for a short period of time and in that time, I found it as the worst company for which I had the displeasure of working.

Yes, the managers steal all the sales they can. Yes, the management is universally incompetent. You get promoted there by doing one thing: selling. It doesn't matter if you don't know how to manage, train, hire, etc. They make managers of good sales people but they are usually the worst at handling managerial positions. Just because you can make sales does not make you a good manager.

Within 2 weeks of working there, I was the senior Sales Counselor because everyone had either been fired or quit. Some people quit within the first two days. It was nuts. They hired anyone and didn't bother to train because they didn't know how to train.

I remember listening to the District Manager screaming on a conference call at the General Managers of the locations in his area telling them to increase sales but gives no training as to what they should be doing in order to increase sales. It was laughable listening to this nut job yelling at the managers.

The best thing about the clubs is that they are all uniform in their lay out, new equipment, and a good variety of equipment and exercise classes. But they are not a full service gym. They usually don't have towel service and they don't have good child care and they don't have a massage service or other full service gym necessities. Also, they have higher rates than Bally's or 24 Hour Fitness and are likely to increase their rates further in the near future because of all the money they are laying out for new clubs and maintaining existing clubs.

Lastly, you may have noticed that LA Fitness has more Rip Off Reports filed against them than 24 Hour Fitness and Bally's combined. That's a lot of complaints.

I highly recommend staying from this insane company whether as a member or as a potential employee.

i have worked for LAF for a short time. but i have seen and heard about managers stealing deals. my advice is to stand up for yourself. my GM is great about fairly distributing walk-ins and TI's but my WGM is a bit greedy and will steal your deal if the opportunity arises. you have to market like crazy and work hard as hell but you CAN make money. especially in an economy like this, just be thankful you are employed. the good thing about LAF is that even in this recession they are growing. the chance for advancement is huge. they are opening a new club every 8 days in the U.S. Is it a hard job? yeah. But can it pay off? absolutely. any sales job you have will be high pressure and cut throat.
