My family and I recently moved to the city of Torrance, California. Torrance is an ideal family-oriented city that appeals to all interest. Everything is within reach; the best schools in the area, not to mention shopping, movies, beaches, and various restaurants. So, I figured that there has to be a good gym within the city as well. LA Fitness was the closest to our house, and so I decided to surprise my wife with a membership.

I walked in the the Torrance gym and inquired about the programs available. I made it clear before signing the contract, that this was a surprise for my wife, whose birthday was coming up. I walked out of there convinced that this was the right thing to do and that she would be happy.

Well, no more than three days later (incidently, the end of the cooling-off period, when you can no longer back out of the contract) my wife gets a call from the Torrance gym. They inquired about her membership and wanted to ask a few questions. My wife insisted that she never signed up for a membership.

I had to leave town immediately after purchasing the membership to go on a military delpoyment (I'm active duty military) so I was not able to call the LA Fitness, Torrance office. Three weeks later, upon my return, I phoned the Torrance gym to inquire about the phone call they made to my wife. The "customer service" attendant was very rude. I asked them, what exactly was the question that they had to call her right away. This put the attendant on the defensive and basicly said "well, what do you want to happen now?" At this point I had had enough with this company and wanted to take my business elsewhere. I requested to get a full refund (one-year membership and two months upfront). I was told that it was beyond the three day window to cancel and that they would not refund my money. Even though my wife had not even seen this gym nor is she even aware where this gym is located.

I phoned the corporate office 800-600-2540 and explained my situation. This time spoke to a manager, who had an even worse attitude than the customer rep at the gym.

These folks are not interested in providing a quality gym. All they want is to get you to sign a conatrct and get their quick $$$$...I spent $300 and my wife never stepped into the gym. Lesson learned for me, but I assure you that everyone I know will hear about my experience with LA Fitness. And all my wife's clients will also hear about the unprofessional operation that LA Fitness runs.
