My husband commissioned artist Leigh Meinhart to create a headshot-style portrait of me as a gift. Unfortunately, our experience was deeply disappointing on multiple levels.

The final portrait—based solely on two casual selfies—bore no resemblance to me. Instead of a refined, professional likeness, the figure in the painting appeared distorted and unrecognizable. It looked nothing like the reference photos or the concept we had discussed. We were shocked by how inaccurate and poorly executed the portrait was, especially considering the price.

Despite not delivering what was promised, Leigh demanded full payment of over $2,000. She never requested an in-person sitting or offered any kind of collaborative feedback process. We later learned she was recovering from laser eye surgery while completing the commission—a detail that was not disclosed to us during the process.

When we expressed our concerns and asked her to revise the piece or provide a version more aligned with our original vision, she refused and insisted we pay in full for a product we never accepted and do not have.

After leaving a one-star review on her Facebook business page—well within my rights as a customer—Leigh began accusing me of harassment over that single review.

Since then, the situation has escalated in an unacceptable direction. A close associate of Leigh’s has begun harassing both me and my followers across multiple Instagram accounts. This individual has made slanderous comments, disclosed personal information, and attempted to damage both my and my husband’s professional reputations online. This kind of retaliation is not only unethical—it violates the basic standards of professional conduct.

We’re sharing this experience to warn others—about both the lack of accountability in the original commission and the disturbing behavior that followed. We sincerely hope no one else has to endure what we did.

Leigh Meinhart A Birthday Portrait Gone Wrong

AUTHOR: Amanda - (United States)

POSTED: Friday, May 16, 2025

My husband commissioned artist Leigh Meinhart to create a headshot-style portrait of me as a gift. Unfortunately, my experience was deeply disappointing on multiple levels.

The final portrait—based solely on two casual selfies—bore no resemblance to me. Instead of a refined, professional likeness, the body seemed disportionate to the neck and head. The facial structure was also off. The shading on the side of the face gave me the impression I had a beard on one side. The landscape in the background had more of sci-fi/fantasy feel to it. It looked nothing like the concept my husband had discussed with me. I was promised by him to have a headshot portrait, similiar to the one Leigh painted for her husband, 'Ernest as Jesus'.

I was shocked by the portrait, and based on that asked my friends and family their opinion on the painting. Across the board, everyone I showed the photo of the painting agreed, the artist missed the mark.

If she had created the figure to resemble my proper body structure and facial structure, I wouldn't have had a problem with it not being a headshot portrait.

According to my husband, who had direct communication with Leigh, she demanded full payment of over $2,000. I wasn never offered an in-person sitting or offered any kind of collaborative feedback process. If I, the subject of the painting, was offered in-person sessions I would've gladly accepted it.

Yes, this was supposed to be a surprise gift, however when my husband had to take pictures of me from multiple angles, he told me what it was for. So, I knew Leigh was making the painting, and was super excited over having something she made.

Fast forward to after seeing the final portrait...

After leaving a one-star review (my opinion on the portrait) on her Facebook business page—well within my rights as a the subject and recipient of the painting—Leigh began accusing me of harassment over that single review.

After threatening to sue me over my review, I took it down unaware of the Consumer Protection Act.

I had only one interaction with her during this time and that was when she messaged me to ask my husband to contact her over payment. Which I did.

Seven years later, the situation has escalated in an unacceptable direction. In July of 2024, this individual or close associates of hers has published libel comments, disclosed personal information over our financial hardships, and attempted to damage our professional reputations online This kind of retaliation is not only unethical—it violates the basic standards of professional conduct.
