I called the service department on 5/2/2012 to request a simple quote for a specified procedure on my vehicle. The procedure is easily located and shop hours/repair estimates available on the GM service software available to all technicians. Of course, Tony at Mac Haik Chevrolet in Houston wouldnt give me a quote, by phone or by fax. He says I have to bring it in to have his "techs" take a look...

But I know exactly what is wrong with my car, I have factory service manuals and have seen the procedure myself, but lack the tooling to perform the repair myself.

Unfortunately, Mac Haik has this philosophy that having customers bring their cars in for "Review" opens the door for all kinds of issues to be found and/or created (yes I am alleging some techs damage vehicles with their all point inspections), and then the great big snake oil show begins.

Well, you need this done and that looks really bad, and oh we found a leak here and ...so on..

If I didnt know much about cars I can see where this is the most underhanded and unscrupulous practice imagineable, to take advantage of customers.

Obviously this has been the norm, because the dumb sonofabitch wouldnt provide a quote unless I let his guys crawl all over the car to find more things for them to charge me for.

I gave my business to their direct competitor, as I was provided with a quote in a timely manner and without any of this snake-eye bulllshitt from Tony and his ilk.

WOW

You ran into a dealer that isn't dumber than a sack of hammers.

First rule: You never ever quote a repair over the phone that your people have NOT diagnosed.

Second Rule: You have not stated the year of your vehicle, Any thing over a couple years old is likely to have hidden issues and phone quoting on that basis is plain foolish.

Third Rule: As this dealer knows that once you price over the phone you hear a click and a dial tone. You are going to go with the shop that quotes the lowest price and good shops intentionally make sure they are not the low price. For that reason anyone I have worked for won't even give phone in quotes the time of day and we would rather have absolutely nothing to do with people that shop this way.
