If I log on to MBNA's online bill pay page, it AUTOMATICALLY sets the date of the payment to be the payment due date (regardless of when I visit the page to make a payment). If I use that date, they charge a $39 late payment fee because it takes two days to process the payment. Even worse, if I make a mistake and come back to the page it RESETS the date _I_ entered.

If they know when the payment is due and that it takes XX days, then they should set the default payment date properly. This is simply unethical. If I could I'd try to file a class action suit based on stuff like this happening. This is quite simply a ripoff.

#6 Consumer Suggestion

Give them a call

AUTHOR: Dawn - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, November 13, 2005

Clifford, did you try just calling MBNA and asking them to remove any late fees? I know this may sound like a simpleton suggestion, but I've had a similar thing happen while posting an online payment. Actually, the late payment was more my fault. I paid the bill two days before it was due because I just forgot to schedule it earlier and thought that two days would be enough time for the payment to go through. However, I ended up being charged a late fee.

I called their customer assistance and explained to them that I thought I had scheduled my payment on time. They looked at my file and saw that I had always been on time making payments in the past and was a customer in good standing and the MBNA employee immediately removed my late charges and any interest that had accrued. No squabbling, no real questions asked. He just explained to me that it is best to schedule online payments several days earlier and to take weekends into account.

I know a lot of people are having problems with MBNA, and I will certainly keep an eye on them, but I've had a card with them since 1992 and have always been happy with their customer service. Of course, I pay off my credit card every month and never really carry a balance.

Something we all overlooked...

AUTHOR: Louise - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, July 02, 2005

I think something we all overlooked including myself, is that the bill payer service is not maintained by MBNA is is a CHECKFREE site, so if there are any problems with the posting times because someof us out there cannot read the terms and conditions to use the site, or cannot accept responsibility for making a late payment, i think complaints should be sent to CHECKFREE not MBNA.

You are incorrect ..They process it 3 days later, which makes the payment late.

AUTHOR: Clifford - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, June 05, 2005

No Jennifer, the date they place is NOT the date they receive the payment. It's they date the payment services submits it. They process it 3 days later, which makes the payment late.

This happens no matter WHEN I go to schedule the payment. They charge a late fee if you accept the default date, even if you go in 27 days in advance to make the payment.

The default date can be changed

AUTHOR: Jennifer - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, June 05, 2005

I am very familiar with the online payment center. Yes it defaults to the due date but you can simply change it to another date. You can not make a payment for the same date you are actually on there. If it is before 1 pm eastern you can scheduale as early as the next business day and after 1 pm 2 business days. The date you put in for the payment to post is the day it's credited to your account.

I have used the website myself too many times to count so I know I'm stating the truth, not just advising a consumer. What probably happened to cause the $39 late fee you are refering to is that you logged on to make your payment on your due date and it was defaulting to the first available payment date which was 2 days after your due date because you waited 'til your due date to make your payment.

Keep in mind payments only post on business days so saturday and sundays can mean if your payments due on a saturday you want to get on by wed or thu morning to make sure it posts friday. Just wanted to clear up that the payment part of the web site is not as backwards as you make it sound.

The default value is the problem.....

AUTHOR: Clifford - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, May 16, 2005

The problem is not that they're posting payments late. I have two problems with this service:

#1) The DEFAULT VALUE WHICH IS PROVIDED BY MBNA makes the payment late. If they know when the payment is due and they know it takes two days, then they should set the default to be two days before the due date. Otherwise the default value should be the current date.

#2) If you reload the page for any reason, no matter what date you've put in for the payment, the website changes it back. This is definitely fraudulent. They should not override values I've typed in.

Thank you 'consumer' for replying, but please re-read my report and you'll see what I'm talking about. My complaint is that the default values are unfairly set to make all payments late regardless of when you go in to make them.

On Line Bill Payments

AUTHOR: Louise - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, May 16, 2005

If you have read the terms and accepted them, you would know that it takes two business days to post. If you go on and schedule your payment on the day its due knowing this information then it is your fault, there is no fraud on there part, they did inform you of the posting process and if you decided not to read it its not there fault.
