Merchants' Credit Guide Scam attempt to collect fake debt ripoff Chicago Illinois

I too received one of these infamous letters from Mr. Ken Hughes for an alleged debt that is not mine. I noticed something that caught my attention regarding the mailing that I have not seen mentioned yet: that the post mark on the envelop in which the letter arrived looked funny - it had no date.

While responding to their allegations via a certified 'drop dead' letter, I inquired about the post mark at the post office. There I learned that the letter was sent via "presort first class". In order to qualify for this type of mailing, the sender must be sending at least 10+ pieces to the exact same zip code, or 50+ pieces to the first three digits of the zip code, and over 500 pieces total.

Now, one question I have is why would a legitimate collection letter be sent, undated, via a form of regional bulk mailing?

In light of what I read on this site, I have sent the company an official response and filed complaints with the Attorney General in my state, the state in which the letter was mailed, the state of Illinois where Merchants' credit is located, and the Federal Trade Commission.

My suggestion is for anyone who receives one of these notices to respond the same way and by no means send them any money as doing so will only legitimize their claim.
