The new "trend" in banking is charging an additional fee of $.50 for Each time we use our Debit card. I find this outrageous. When we opened these accounts they Encouraged the use of these debit cards for our "convenience". Both Old National Bank and 5/3 Bank have imposed these fees as of last month. Talk about nickel and dimeing us to death! Even the credit unions have started to charge their customers w/ this extra fee. Other than the "bottom line" ie: making More money, I find no plausable reason for these extra fees forced upon their customers. Shame on them.

Banks

AUTHOR: Boobyfan35 - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, January 19, 2008

Ever since the offering of FREE checking...they had to come up with a way to make money when nobody was taking the "pay to have" accounts.

5/3rd will tell you up front that they can and will hold ANY check even payroll checks through there own bank for as much as 10 days.

Good rule to follow...deposit today...check your account the next day to see if the money is there and available..if not...go inside and ask why it's not there.

To the ladys in evansville....5/3rd's primary owners are a local family.

1 has a drug publicly known drug problem...1 has a gambling problem...and 1 just cant manage there money or make good choices.

If you know who i am talking about...think about what has happened to every buisiness they have gotten there hands on...bancrupt...or almost..

what about the poor man?

AUTHOR: James - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, September 17, 2006

rightnow i am serving in iraq. my wife told me about the charge and that was the first i had heard of it. she just told me about a week ago. i dont know how long it has been going on though. why the extra charge, to make money right? well, i know there are alot of people who can afford it. i mean it is just .50 cents right. what about the people living paycheck to paycheck? sure take money out of the ATM. then there is the hassle of having to count it and everything else. and what if the ATM is out of cash at the time you need it. the idea of the checkcard was to ensure more convenience. now they are taking it away?

banks make enough money off of loans and all that other stuff. trust me, i know all too well. and what about our other servicemembers overseas who might not have anyone back home to tell them the news. so here they are using their cards, and expecting XXX amount on money to be in the bank when they get home and there is only XX. they will come plum unglued. and i dont blame them. not a bit. this has got to be just another profit making idea for the banks and piss on the little man.

people like Dave are the REAL threat to our free society.

AUTHOR: R - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, November 04, 2005

Megan, people like Dave are the REAL threat to our free society. They are narrow-minded cretins that lack the ability to logically argue with someone that may have a different point of view. They resort to sophomoric name calling and shouting down. All because you have a different point of view that he doen't like. He doesn't want to hear it. He's right about everything, just ask him.

Our founding fathers gave you the right of free speech, but Dave would like to take it away. Only his opinions count you know.

Obviously, you're superior to this fool, but please don't stoop his level and rebut him. He strikes me as some insane mutation of socialist AND facist.

He's sick.

Megan Again

AUTHOR: Dave - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, November 04, 2005

You obviously didn't read my response, which doesn't surprise me, since again, you always side with the corporations.

I did talk about banking, you dim-wit. My vocabulary is just fine, and for the record, I did NOT wish you harm. I said your day will come, meaning, you will be the victim of a ripoff, then let's see how loud you yell.

As far as name calling, it's appropriate in this case, because you ARE a stupid b***h, and your rebbuttals on this site prove it. Until you stop saying stupid things like 'Banks have to make a profit too', you will remain a stupid b***h.

Dear Dave,

AUTHOR: Megan - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, November 04, 2005

I'm just wondering how calling me a "stupid b***h" and telling me that you wish harm upon me is in any way satisfying your pre-said goal in offering help to the consumer. Once again, if you want to protect YOUR MONEY, keep it at home. This is a case that perfectly shows why an education is beneficial. Cursing is generally because of a lack of vocabulary and/or intelligence. If you want to rebut me or my statements, the best way to do it is to write as if you have something intelligent to say. Babbling on about how you don't like me and wish me harm contributes nothing to this conversation about (perhaps you need a reminder) BANKING. Have a nice day.

Banks ARE a business... The free rides are going away.

AUTHOR: Ken - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, November 03, 2005

Banks exist to earn a profit for their stockholders, much as any other business does. They will try various ways to maximize profits, much as any other business will. And you have the ability to NOT choose to use their services, as you do with any other business. If enough people leave because of this fee, it will disappear quickly.

I wouldn't count on that happening though, what is more likely is that you will see more banks imposing this fee. Every time you use your debit card, your bank gets charged for the transaction by the network that processes it. They are merely passing a part of this charge on to you. As someone above pointed out, not all are doing this, but it is becoming more common.

Being objective, do a rough calculation of the average balance you maintain in your account. Very roughly speaking, your bank can invest that average amount of money in loans. If I kept $1000 in my account at ALL times, my bank could earn around $80 on that amount. If it costs them $5 a month to maintain my account (a reasonable number) they make a small profit. If I get interest on the account, they earn less... if they fee me, they earn more. At any rate, they aren't making a whole lot on all my money.

You are seeing more and more where customers who maintain large balances (like 10 or 15 thousand) and getting more perqs from the bank.

Anyway, it's all economics. If you (or I) want these kinds of services, more frequently we are going to be asked to pay for them. The free rides are going away.

Why Didn't I think Of That

AUTHOR: Cory - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, November 03, 2005

That's just what all these bank and credit union scumbags are saying. Back when they tried to convince us that credit cards were the way to go. Then when they got so many billions of dollars out of stupid people in interest. Then they came up with debit cards. That was the way to go. Sooo much better then checks, for whom? It cut down the expense of the banks on processing fees by doing it electronicly. Now, some bank weenie comes up with the idea of charging people to use their debit cards, their own money, something they're already paying the banks and C/U's for in the form of service charges. But what the heck, 50 cents here, a dollar there, they'll never notice. And, if they do, if all the banks and C/U's are doing it, what are they gonna do? Go someplace else? Hey, if we can get $1 or $1.50 out of 'em for an ATM transaction, what's 50 cents. Go ahead suckers. Pay the 50 cents or $1 or $1.50. I remember when all this NEW crap was free. They let you get use to it, then they charge you for it. Don't play their game. PAY CASH.

Megan

AUTHOR: Dave - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, November 03, 2005

You need help. And until you get it, you should not be on or near a computer. You are stupid and condescending, offering absolutely no help in any of your responses on this site, other than siding with the corporations that are ripping off the consumer. So, shut your pie-hole and get a grip on reality.

Next to pharmaceuticals, the profit margin for banks is at an all time high, thanks largely to the restructuring of how they process deposits and debits. Since this restructuring, overdraft fees are at an all time high as well, which is pure profit to the banks. Now, if that isn't enough, some of them have figured out that if they process 100,000 debits in a day, they can make an extra $500 - $1000 a day by charging us for the use of OUR MONEY that THEY ARE MAKING MONEY ON ANYWAY! You stupid b***h, how dare you attack anyone on this site! Your day will come, and I only wish I could see you drowning in your own pathetic garble!

Use your card as a credit card

AUTHOR: David - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, November 03, 2005

Don't use your card as a debit card. Make sure you tell the cashier to run it as a credit card.

The banks and credit unions that are doing this still let you process credit card transactions for free.

I have not seen a pure debit card in a long time if this is what you have turn it in for a debit/Mastercard or debit/Visa whichever one your bank issues.

Are you serious?

AUTHOR: Megan - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, November 02, 2005

This is a forum for alerting other consumers of the problems with certain companies, for discussing ethical and non-ethical business practices. You're completely violating that with your blatant advertising! How is that ethical? Who is going to bank with you if your business is so bad that you must stoop as low as to musical shenanigans and replying to rip-off reports?

Actually Megan most banks don't charge for debit card usage...

AUTHOR: Ben - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, July 02, 2005

Hate to tell you this Megan, but most banks don't charge for debit card usage. TRUE, banks are businesses too, but as an employee of Bank One (Chase now), I've NEVER heard/seen of a person being charged to use a debit card.

My suggestion to the original poster is to close your account and leave the evil corporation that is 5/3.

Banks are Businesses, Too!

AUTHOR: Megan - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, December 19, 2004

When was the last time you saw a business that didn't make a profit?

Honey, you need to sit down and think about the capitalist system that we live in. Neither products nor services are free. A business can't stay in business if they aren't making a profit from whatever it is that they do.

Banks are businesses, too. They perform a valuable service to you every day. How do you think they pay their employees? Or your interest? Or loan you money? Of course they charge for things! They have to eat, too!

Just a suggestion--if you don't want to be charged for using your money, keep it at home. Pretty simple, huh? If your house burns down or someone steals it, you'll wish you had put it in the bank.

Another easy solution. Just go to your bank's ATM before spending. There is no charge for that.

Get over the whining. Services are not free. You go work for a few weeks without pay and try to live. That's what you want banks to do.
