Plas-Ticks charged us 230%+ for event tickets we bought for our son at Christmas.

The face value is $79.00, but we were charged $185.80. We did not know until the tickets arrived in the mail what the face value actually was. How do these businesses get by with this? Why do we attend any events anymore with these gouging ticket scalpers businesses?

#2 Consumer Suggestion

No Scam--Just Willing Consumers

AUTHOR: Bearded Curmudgeon - (USA)

POSTED: Thursday, January 06, 2011

There's no scam here. Do you have any idea what percentage markup you get from a furniture store? I do, and that's why I never buy furniture from a furniture store. (I never, ever buy new cars either, for the same reason.)

And it really is that simple. Prices are subjective; that is, companies can sell products at whatever prices people are willing to pay. And, really, there's nothing wrong with that. They'll lower their prices when people shop smarter, frankly.

For the future, I would suggest simply finding out the window price before buying. Google is a good friend of mine, personally, but really, it should be as simple as calling the venue of the event, or the contract company that works the venue's ticket windows to find what you'd have paid at the window.

Sorry for your plight, genuinely, but the answer here is to simply shop more thoroughly.

Why does it matter?

"The face value is $79.00, but we were charged $185.80."

Didn't you agree to pay $185.80 for the tickets? Anybody can sell anything for whatever the buyer is willing to pay. Apparently, you were willing to pay $185+.

"We did not know until the tickets arrived in the mail what the face value actually was."

The face value is what you pay for the tickets from the event organizer (if you can get them). If you want to pay face value, why are you buying from a ticket broker?

"How do these businesses get by with this?"

Because people are willing to pay extra not to have to wait in lines to buy good seats. If you think a 115%+ markup is outrageous, you'd probably be surprised at the markups you pay to retail stores and services like auto repair. The only reason this ticked you off is that you know what the seller paid.

"Why do we attend any events anymore with these gouging ticket scalpers businesses?"

I don't. But, as long as the sheep keep flocking to pay outrageous prices for a few hours of entertainment, the practice will continue. It's all a question of supply and demand.
