I am a single, stay at home mother and my passion until my daughter was born, was writing poetry. It still is a passion in my life. It has always been my dream to one day publish a book with all of my poetry. I do not wish to do it for the money, simply to share my work with fellow poetry lovers of the world.

I had started to publish my peoms on poetry.com, which assures a poet that they will hold the copyright. I believe it's been at least three years since I last published anything on Poetry.com yet just recently I visited my poems on the site and the copyright read as the date I was visiting instead of the actual date I published them there. This concerned me a bit at the time yet I shook it off and eventually thought nothing of it.

Today I received an email from Nigel Hillary, Publisher at Noble House, London, UK; this letter stated that he had the pleasure of reading my work published in their Theatre of the Mind and would like to know if I would submit another poem for their upcoming collection called Colours of the Heart. Thinking nothing of it as before I entered a recent poem of mine called If We Should Say Farewell, and submitted it without ordering a copy.

I then thought, maybe since I've been such a devoted contributor, perhaps they would consent to send me a copy of my published work for free. I clicked the reply button on my mail and composed a polite, heart-felt letter to Mr. Hillary making my request. When I sent the letter it was immidiately sent back to me as address not recognized and undeliverable.

After my letter was returned I got more suspicious and decided to try to find a website for Noble House Publishers to see if there was a way to get in touch with Nigel Hillary. The web results came up and this site was the first on the list. I've read many other reports of fellow poets being ripped off and am horrified!! I now wonder if I have just laid yet another of my heart-felt creations into the hands of a thief. If anyone has any information as to what is really going on PLEASE help me.

"Vanity" Publishing

AUTHOR: Channing - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, November 26, 2006

First off these people have no clue about running a website. There is no telling where the date comes from that shows up. Sometimes I am surprised the site works as well as it has when I visited some time ago.

Second, this is "vanity" publishing. The writers hold the copyright and the publisher publishes it hoping to sell a lot of books to the writers. Free books for submission is not a sold book and defeats the purpose of making money selling books.

I have had a few poems published and photographs as well. I send in knowing that I am pretty much buying a copy of the book as payment for publishing. They say that you do not have to buy a copy but you do not know for sure if it is published otherwise and they know you would want a copy of your published work.

I am lucky in getting my poems published correctly because some of the proofs have been horribly messed up.

Some of the stuff they lump together shows that they aren't so choosey on content or quality but it is nice to find quality work in the books.

I'm a little surprised they sent you something 3 years later, but they basically just go through their lists and mass mail or email.

The email that looked personally sent to you was sent to all on their list. It may or may not have said not to reply in tiny letters at the bottom so it wouldn't look like a mass email. You'll have a hard time finding a way to really contact them online and they will probably trash a letter you send, especially if you're requesting free book(s).

By publishing or misrepresenting the copyright year they haven't stolen your work. You've given them the right to publish it and you keep ownership rights. Giving them the right to publish it (via web and book) lets them do so without paying a royalty. Hundreds of poems in a book I imagine they could get away with something like a penny for 20 or more books, definitely not an expensive book per poem.

Unless it has changed in the last couple of years, songwriters only get 7 1/2 cents per sale of a song on a CD.

I too have just recieved noble house poetry letter for a poem

AUTHOR: Anthony - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, December 17, 2004

I have sent 10 poems to Poetry.com and 7 or the 10 have been published. The last one I included an artists profile at their request free. I sent a letter with my last poem asking if anyone ever saw anything from their works, My previous poem was on page 1, but I never have won anything. Now I get a letter from Nigel Hillary just as the other individual did. Mine is dated December 1, 2004 I have written a new poem and was ready to send it, but now I am not so sure. I guess I will send it to poetry.com, at least you can go into theirs and see the poems. I write my poems to help people. If one person reads the poem at the right time and it helps them then it did its job. My poems are mostly about god and inspiring people to find the right paths in life. All my poetry have a message for mankinds sake. I hate hearing that maybe the messages I have tried to get to so many may only be seen by the artists. Hopefully someone may see this rebuttle and go seek out my name on Poetry.com and my work will be done. Poetry comes from the heart but the message comes form the spirit. Take Care all and pray to god each day for he will shine on you all day.

It's the old artist con!

AUTHOR: Paul - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, December 05, 2004

They do the exact same thing to painters too! And, people who think they have a talent for music.

Basically, anyone who feels they have a gift is exploited. It's an easy con to work because the artist will sell themselves. Who wouldn't like to see their name and work in a book?

Sadly, they only people who ever buy the book are the artists themselves. In the writing arena, it's called vanity press.

Nobody is sacred. The inventors get the same crap too. They take their money and tell them what a great invention they came up with.

For every person with talent or an original idea, there are at least two con artists to take em.

Sadly, this is the state of the world. Now you know. Naturally, if it's on the internet, and it costs money, it's probably some kind of fraud. Why else would it be on the internet?

They're begging for more...

AUTHOR: Diana - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, December 04, 2004

I submitted a poem to Poetry.com a couple of years ago. I even fell for the ploy and bought a book, gave it to my mother. It was a nice gift, and made her proud. I even entered another poem online. Unfortunately, their pitch never changed and soon I realized it was lame. I never went to their $400 conferences, and surely didn't succumb to many more solicitations. Well low and behold, today I received a letter from Noble House London, with a request, not much unlike Poetry.com, to write for them. If theres one thing I do know, publishers dont go seeking writers out, not novices anyway. My name was sold off I'm sure, or they are a subsidiary of Poetry.com. Anyway, I felt special for all of about 2 seconds, and decided to do some research online. I have to admit, it was intriguing. Noble House's envelope, all official looking, showing the world map, and red and blue lines adorned the edging with a stamp on the front, in 4 languages saying Via Air Mail. They went overboard on this one. It's screams "Farse". Well, this company has found a way, like many other crooked companies, to play off peoples dreams. Keep your eyes peeled, there may be a new one coming your way soon. If you notice, the name NOBLE HOUSE refers to hotel chains, and also software. Be careful of wolves in sheeps clothing. They used a name that was already accepted by the public. Noble House, Noble House, Oh how you're a Louse; You tried with your fancies to steal my fancy, but your left there, small as a mouse.
Hows that for poetry. Just for you. Put that in your book.

I'm sorry, but everyone that submits poetry to that site receives a letter like that.

AUTHOR: Sara - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, December 05, 2003

Poetry.com counts on you not reading or understanding the terms and conditions applicable to submitting poetry to their site.

The books are mainly sold to the people that submitted the poetry. I sent in a joke poem just to see what they would do. Sure enough, I got the standard congratulatory letter saying that they had reviewed my poem and had selected it to be published. I even used a fake name first name Not second name Eileen, if you want to see the truly horrid poems that I put up, that they said were chosen to be published. It did make for an entertaining "we're going to publish your poem letter" as they as it said Not instead of a real first name in the fill in the blank form letter.

They did not steal your work however. Do not feel too bad for falling for this though, sadly many have taken the publishing of their work by them as a great accomplishment.
