This is a common tactic of Providian

I too had a hassle getting back my overpaid amount. The first check that they sent me (after about a month of inquiries) had a stop payment put on it the DAY AFTER THE POSTMARK on the envelope. When I asked them why, the said that it was 'lost in the mail'! Uh-huh...lost in the mail ONE DAY AFTER its mailed!! My final check reached me two months after my overpayment appeared on my statement. Providian tries to squeeze every last drop out of their customers--even when its only pennies of interest that they earn on ill-gotten gains.
