RainSoft told me that the safe level of TDS in my water was 50, the actual safety level is 500. The false information they provided me is what influenced me to finance the $8,300 water filtration system.
I have since contacted them for a return and refund. They have refused since it is past the 3 day return policy. This company is fraudulent, do not do business with them!

TDS levels

AUTHOR: Flint - (Afghanistan)

POSTED: Sunday, February 02, 2020

Robert is generally correct.  But I would like to point out that there is no "safe" or "dangerous" TDS level.  TDS just means "total dissolved solids".  Obviously, safety depends entirely on what the solids are.  If they are simply calcium or magnesium ions (the most common situation), then they are actually good for you (though not for your water heater or dishwasher).  Even 5000 ppm would not be particularly harmful -- that's what "mineral water" is, basically.  If they are lead ions, even 1 ppm would be far too high.

On top of that, what you bought is most likely a water softener system.  It doesn't actually reduce TDS, it simply replaces calcium and magnesium ions with sodium or potassium.  This prevents the calcium from forming insoluble scale in your pipes and water heating equipment.  If your TDS is 500, you most likely have hard water, and so a water softener can be useful.  That said, $8300 is a horrible rip-off.  You can buy a perfectly serviceable system at any home improvement store for about $400, or a nicer professional-grade one online for about $800.

Next time, do your research and shop around before you sign up for something stupid.  Just as a rule of thumb: whenever a pushy salesman is involved, you are getting ripped off.  Companies with competitive pricing don't need salesmen.

Well...No

AUTHOR: Jim - (United States)

The only reason I'm responding is that you are WRONG.  Here is the standard:

A number above 100 ppm is typically considered a high TDS content. But as with low TDS categories, a TDS reading can be considered high or low based on context. According to the EPA, the maximum concentration of TDS for drinking water is 500 ppm. However, many water supplies have TDS levels that surpass this limit.

In other words, if you think 500 ppm of TDS is OK, it isn't.  Now, the only water system I know of that can reduce TDS in water is a reverse osmosis water system, which costs maybe 50% more than you spent.

The false information they provided me is what influenced me to finance the $8,300 water filtration system.  This is the part I don't understand.  Even if I had no idea was TDS was and the correct levels, it took me about 30-45 seconds to find the information.  If I had to finance $8,300 for anything, why would I take the word of a salesman?  If all of this research you tried to do happened after the fact, then that's your fault.

I have since contacted them for a return and refund. They have refused since it is past the 3 day return policy.  Well, if it is their policy, then you bought yourself a system.  Now, the good part, I suspect, is that if you have hard water deposits in the state, then you're going to be drinking some pretty healthy water.

Moral of the story:  Never take a salesman's word for anything.  Research before you buy....anything.
