In saying that the letter looked UNofficial. I believe that the poster is afraid to answer anything for frear that this is another phishing scam, or some sort of con that could cause trouble for her in the future.

Contacting an atttorney may be a step in the right direction, but she also has the option of contacting the FBI to find out if they have sent any inquiries to her. At least in this manner, she gets some peace of mind that she's truly communicating with the agency and not a con artist. You can't be too careful these days.

Allison, if you aren't sure about responding to a letter you've received from the FBI, then I would suggest speaking with an attorney about it.

I have no idea about what is going on in your situation, but I can think of several different reasons why an individual may be hesitant to respond to a mailing from the FBI.

If there is something that you would rather not reveal or that you just feel uncomfortable about, you are fully within your rights to refuse to respond to this request based on Fifth Amendment privileges.

I have been in contact with the FBI and am filling in all papers. Do not ignore their requests. It is totally legitimate.
