We had misplaced a gift card which we had received. Upon finding the card we called the manager of the Romano's Macaroni Grill to see if an exception to their rule could or would be made. They declined and upheld their rule where a fee of $2.00 per month is deducted or charged against the gift card to the point where the entire gift card was depleted. I find that this is a rip-off as they, in my opinion, confiscated the gifted monies. We will not frequent their restaurant or any of the others associated with them in the future and would certainly never give or recommend giving any of their gift cards!

*The time lapse charges on the old cards only started incurring after a two-year period from the purchase date. "Misplaced" the card??

And I went back and re-read your post. Why did you just call? The cards have a magnetic strip on them for a reason. Any server can swipe it, do a balance inquiry, and tell you if there's a balance. Did you just ASSUME there was nothing on it?

Not to dispell your aggravation with this company, but I do have a rebuttal to your problem with Macaroni Grill.

I've worked there for five years and have never incurred this problem. Why? Because they stopped putting time-lapse charges on their cards since before I worked here. Now, I'm not all gung-h*o about working here - in fact, I hate it. However, the card you used had to have been very VERY old, purchased when they DID deduct charges (in which case, it's your or the purchaser's fault), or the card had already been used. Either case, if handled properly by a knowledgeable manager, can be determined by tracking the card's charge history. Did you bother to talk to a manager? ALSO, all gift cards have a guest copy of the receipt which includes the individual card number and the total purchase price with a date. If you are giving the card as a gift, you are told that the person receiving it needs to keep that copy. My guess is you didn't have that, either.

Either way, I'm guessing it doesn't matter at this point. However, if you had pressed the issue, a manager will usually (SHOULD usually) offer Be-Our-Guest coupons in either 5 or 10 dollar increments. They work just like the gift cards.
