I spoke with George at Santini he quoted me $175.00 an hour and on the day of the move changed it to $180.00 an hour. I needed my household picked up on one day and delivered the next. George explained that they usually charge to hold the contents but since it was only one day they would not charge me. On the day of the delivery they broke a large mirror that went over my bed and also broke parts of the wood on the bedroom set. In addition the men were very unprofessional I smelled marajuana coming from the back of the truck. The men looked like they were picked up from a local 7/11 looking for work for the day.

As they were moving the mirror into place in my bedroom the mirror broke. In addition they came with no tools to take apart the furniture and put it back together. The new neighbors in my complex had to loan they the tools and they came with no water the new neighbors gave them water. The men were unkempt and certainly not motivated to work.

When it came time for payment I only gave them a tip because the owner of the company assured me he would pay for the mirror. I have called each week for a month they told me they could not locate a mirror person. I told him I would locate a mirror guy which I did and had a professional mirror guy send them the estimate. I followed up with a phone call and they still told me to call back another day. Now I am going to take them to small claims court to try and recoup my loss.

Sue Them For What Exactly?

OK, they broke your mirror.  Unfortunately, you are not entitled to the cost associated with a new mirror.  If you read your moving contract, you'll find you're entitled to valuation.  Valuation for a company like this on a local move is around $0.60 per pound.

A 20lb. mirror, assuming it's even that heavy, would net you $12.  Federal law only allows you collect what the contract states, which is valuation, and a small claims court would throw out any lawsuit you might file for that reason.  So for the court filing fee, you'd collect $12 max.

When it came time for payment I only gave them a tip because the owner of the company assured me he would pay for the mirror.  I mean you should have tipped them anyway; the guys who do your move are the hardest working and lowest paid people you can imagine.  BUT his oral statement would not be enforcable.  That's why moving contracts are in writing.  Because oral promises mean nothing.

The new neighbors in my complex had to loan they the tools and they came with no water the new neighbors gave them water. The men were unkempt and certainly not motivated to work.  The guys should have had tools, however with a local move, I've seen that happen..  However, it is your responsibility to buy water for your movers, not your neighbors.  If I were you, I would have apologized to the movers for not having water and some snacks to give them.  Insofar as motivated, you probably treated them poorly, you've already judged them harshly, had nothing for them to drink or snack on....and you weren't going to tip them.  Yeah, I would not be so motivated to work for you either.

Next time, don't hire movers.  Do it yourself.  If you have any friends (I doubt it), let them do your move.  Don't feed them or give them water while they move you.  Let's see if they're still your friends after it's done.
