My students pay me for their Scholstic Orders then I usually pay Scholastic online or send them a check. Since one of my student's parents gave me a check I decided to send a check as well.

Later I forgot I wrote Scholastic a check. I thought that I had lost a check, so I cancelled it. The next month I received a letter from a collection agency stating that I owed them my debt to Scholastic plus an additional thirty dollars.

I knew that I owed Scholastic money, so I paid the collection agency. I contacted Scholastic about the extra thirty dollars (their charge, not the agency's) because I was never notifed that I had a debt to them. In fact, my account shows Payment received - Thank you and that I have actually paid them five cents extra. I had and still have actually placed orders since them. (On another note, three of the books I ordered had the same thirty pages twice and then skipped ahead.)

Scholastic returned my email and said debts are not reflected on your club account, blah, blah, blah, Thanks for choosing Scholastic! I contacted customer service again and received no response.

I know of other teachers that were notified of their debts, so why wasn't I? I understand that it was my carelessness that made me cancel the check in the first place, but how was I supposed to know I owed them money still if they did not tell me and my account showed that I had paid?

Scholastic's goal is not to keep children reading. It is to keep them buying. They are making a huge profit off of teachers, students, and parents, and treat them unfairly in return.
