Brought my car to Sun Devil Auto to have the brakes check because of braking noise.  Got an estimate over $900 because they recommended replacing the calipers, brakes and rotors.  Got two other estimates (one before and one after) and estimates were under $200 without the necessity of replacing the calipers and rotors--just turning the rotors and replacing the brakes was all that was needed.  Chose one of the lower estimates by the other repair shop and job was done to my satisfaction.  Beware of this auto repair shop and have more than one estimate done whenever possible.

Sun Devil Auto #24

AUTHOR: Sun Devil Auto - ()

POSTED: Thursday, February 27, 2014

Sun Devil Auto takes great pride in our diagnostic ability, our attention to detail and our unwavering commitment to our customers and the proper repair of their vehicles.

Tony recently brought his 1999 Lexus RX 300 with 158,501 miles in for a brake inspection. His complaint was that he was hearing a crunching noise when reversing his vehicle out of his garage. Upon inspection our technicians found that the brakes in the right rear on the vehicle had “NO” pad material remaining on in inside pad and the outside pad had 40% of life remaining. On the left rear the same wear pattern was noted were the inside pad had 10% remaining and the outside pad had 50% of material. Additionally both inside brake pads were worn in a wedge shape indicating the caliper piston was coming out of the caliper bore at an angle.  Because the caliper piston was at an angle it was not retracting, causing the inner brake pads to wear quicker than the outer pads. With the amount of mileage on this vehicle rebuilding calipers to correct this type of wear is not optimal; replacement is often the best option for proper brake system operation. Tony's rear brake rotors were measured at .327 inches left and .344 inches right. The discard specification is .354 inches. These measurements indicate brake rotor replacement.

During Tony's visit he was brought to the vehicle and was shown all of the items that were needed to properly return his vehicle to proper braking performance.  We understand that like many things, auto repair diagnosis can be a matter of opinion.

We stand behind our original diagnosis of Tony's vehicle and although he was able to go to another shop and receive partial repairs at a lower price. Unfortunately in Tony's case there are underlying problems that have not been reconciled.   We believe that he will continue to have an uneven wear problem with his brakes.  We would like nothing more than to have an opportunity to regain his trust and have him as a continued customer.
