My son recieved multiple Christmas gifts this year(2004)from family members. They did not have the reciept for me but said they bought the stuff from Target. When I took the merchandise back to Target they said I would get the sale price. I told them that was fine of course since I did not have the receipt. They then told me they would have to do each return separately because you can only make three returns per year. Once again I said that is fine. Then she tells me I have to buy something in the toy department for the same price. I told her my son didn't need anymore toys. He needed a bookcase. She said I couldn't exchange the merchandise for that. When I asked her why her reply was, "That's our policy".

I then asked to speak to the manager and explained the situation to her. She basically told me too bad. It's our policy. I asked to speak to her manager and got the same reply. So I called the guest relations number. I explained it once again and got the same reply. I told her I have two Target credit cards that I max out EVERY month and pay them off. That's not including what I spend in cash, check, and debit cards. She didn't care. I also told them that I was returning only 25.00 in merchandise and was trying to purchase 150.00 in merchandise. Where's the logic in telling someone they can't spend more money?

When I still couldn't get an answer as to why that is their policy I wrote to the company. I wrote them three times and their only reply is "That's our policy".

I have three relatives who work for Target. One actually works at the one where this all started. They all tell me that Target always gives out vouchers for merchandise returned and people can buy whatever they want.

I wrote to the company again and told them that and said I have never had this problem before in the Murrietta store. The store has always given me a gift card when I return things.

They told me I got the gift card because I had the reciept.

When I wrote back I told them they were wrong. If I had the reciept I would have been able to get the cash back as I always did in the past. Once again I asked them to explain to me why their policy is that you can't spend your money anyway you 3 want to in their store. They get the money no matter what so what's the difference?

Guess what their reply was. Yep!! "That's our ploicy"

So I went down the street to another store and returned the products and spent 300.00. I have not gone back to Target since and have informed everyone of what happened and several people (even people I don't know) said they will no longer shop there. Thank-you other store for treating valuable customers with respect.

It is a relativly new polivy, but it is the policy, and cannot be broken

This policy hasn't been in effect for long, but it is in effect nevertheless. The reason I believe it is there is to protect target from getting ripped off by people who find things laying around, say toys or appliences and try to exchange them to get high priced electronics and other items. Returns without reciepts have become department-specific so that that if you are returning toys, you must get toys, if you are returning appliences, you must get appliences or kitchenwares.

It is a policy tough, and I'll bet that with every toy your relatives bought, they also got their reciept AND a gift reciept, the gift reciept is supposed to be stuffed in the box with the gift and would have allowed you to get a giftcard for the full amount your relatives paid to use all over the store. The lesson here is to not try to make youself special so that you can work around the policies, but that everyone eho gets a gift doesnt through away the gift reciept target has to pay to print for EVERY transaction, but instead, give it to the person recieving the gift.

You didn't get ripped off, you just weren't able to have your way despite the 6 people that tried to explain to you the policy that is now in place. The connection you had that worked for Target obviously wasn't aware of the policy that is now in place (I was a bit late in finding out about it myself). If there weren't bad people out there trying to work the system and use holes to cheat Target out of their hard earned money, then policies like this wouldn't have to be in place. But the world is a bad place, and each company has to fend for its own, just like you do.
