AFAIK, they cannot put you in jail; the legal course of action would be to sue you for the money owed. They will probably go through a collection agency first, and that is your first opportunity to file any dispute about the debt and the amount which has already been paid.

They CAN garnish your wages or your bank account, if they win the lawsuit. It is the same type of debt and collection process that a credit card company would follow.

Your best course of action would be to consult a lawyer, there are many free services available to see what options you have.
