* : Why is this a rip off??

* : No rip off
On 8/13/09 I called the UPS Store in Troy, MO and spoke with Pam and asked for shipping on an item of which I gave her the exact dimensions. She quoted a rate of $17.50 (not including their charge to package it which would be additional) not a problem.

Why is this a rip off??

Shipping locations such as The UPS Store in Troy, MO, are no different than the post office, generate rates based on zip code, weight, and size, thousands of times each month. Though an honest human error over the phone is possible anywhere, the quote more than likely was accurate.
We have customers call for rates several times each day. Each time they do, we print out the estimate and set it aside. This should be unnecessary, but we do it for good reason. All too often, when the person brings in the package, the 'actual' dimensions and weight are different than that conveyed over the phone. We often hear things like, "The dimensions are printed right there on the bottom of the box." Those dimensions are the inside dimensions, and 1" needs to be added to the external sides. Also, it's common for customers to have boxes, especially larger ones, with significant bulges that protrude above and beyond the box edge. And many customers do not understand why dimensions are rounded up rather than down (subtracting the volume in their favor).
This irrational complainer could have given readers the information to validate the complaint. What were those dimensions, weight, and destination zip code? Any viewer could then determine online themselves whether the rate is actually $17.50, $48.00, or something else. If the dimensions indicate $17.50, they also would have at The UPS Store. I suspect that a single inch or two tripped the package into an oversize category that bumped the rate to $48.00 - the same rate as found online (The UPS Store rates are often lower than online, as certain assessorials are waived.)
Rates at The UPS Stores are actual and accurate UPS rates and are not jacked up. The odds of a human error are remote, but could happen all the same if the were requested online, 1-800-PICKUPS, 1-800-GOFEDEX, or a phone quote given via the post office. I recommend that the complainer give us the dimensions so that show $17.50. If they were correct, then the store would be $17.50. If the dimensions show $48 even, then this complainer gave the wrong dimensions over the phone and should take a good hard look at him/herself and try to understand the simple error made. To state, "Pam has changed her mind" is immature, illogical, and rather absurd.

Before you flip on someone, how about some reading comprehension. the $17.50 and the $48 BOTH are BEFORE packaging costs. She clearly stated she was expecting packaging costs.

You admit she quoted you a price THAT DIDN'T INCLUDE PACKAGING COSTS. Your question was answered honestly and correctly. You didn't like the price...how is that a rip off? I swear, some people just can't be satisfied with anything.
