Viking Collections and their Tactics:

On Friday July 8th I called Viking Collections and/or was forwarded to them from Capital One - when I was calling on behalf of a credit card balance. I was calling with the effort to settle the account.

Robert (Viking employee) explained the total being $1,183. or close to that amount. I explained that my statement showed an amount that was for approximately $360. less that what he said it was. He said that Capital One probably made a mistake but the total balance was surely $1,180 something. I said I could not afford that.

He asked what I could afford. I said $800. and he proceeded to give me the okay and the information on sending that amount. It was clear that I could send that amount and that amount only and that I wanted to be sure that this would clear the account. He said that I should put upon cashing this is settlement for account *************. Onto the check. This check number is ****.

I sent the check overnight which cost $10.95 via California Overnight service. I was not mistaken about what we had discussed on the phone. But Robert was very clear about me calling him on Monday. Now I know why. I can see the technique that is being used and when I called him on it I was rudely verbally abused and threatened me that I must pay more or the total amount would revert to about $1,200.

I expressed that I had felt cheated according to our agreement on Friday. This felt like a procedure. They ask the person to send in a certain amount and then they call back to get more.

After some debate he said he could come down to just an additional $100. only seconds earlier he said I had to pay the total balance. So I felt more like this was a scam. I debated the issue on principle. He then came down to $80. more than what I had sent. This was now ridiculous. Why not just accept my $800. payment.

I debated again and he still said that what was agreed on Friday never happened. I imagine that they use a simple ploy to allow the customer to assume a certain action and then call back a few days later to say it isn't the case. I would like to speak with other clients of Viking to see if this is indeed a regular practice. After research on the internet I have discovered this to be TRUE.

Note that the so called can't go below the 1,100. was dropped to $100. above what I sent. Then I debated their tactics and he dropped it to $80. above the $800. that I had sent. All this for $80. I truly believe Capital One would have preferred to resolve this issue.

In any case Robert Turrek said that he would review the tapes recorded on Friday with his manager. I immediately asked to speak with a manager and Robert refused. Stating that he didn't want to waste their time.

He also said that the conversation was being recorded but only after he had harassed, threatened and argued with me. Everything I said, about Viking or Robert he tried to say I was doing and not him. I called to settle a debt and he was not being helpful. He was simply threatening me that if I didn't take the offer he would say I was unwilling to pay because it was within his power to do so.

Isn't it my power to say that????? I called and I responded and I did what was agreed on. Robert denied access to a manager or anyone else at the place of business. He threatened me with high interest as well as reverting back to the full amount.

I was trying to resolve the issue and Robert was denying me the ability to do so. I believe that Robert lied about the conversations being recorded.

If the conversations were indeed recorded then that request will be on there as well as the constant speech of Robert trying to make me out to be some kind of bad guy. Saying I was going to harass the company. He said I couldn't speak with a manager and I stated that I could call back until I spoke with a manager.

My goal being able to speak with someone who could help . Instead he said I was going to harass the company by calling and calling. That assumes my motives are different. My motives were to settle this debt. Isn't that in the best interest of Capital One?

I am trying hard to work this out but Robert has been very difficult. I believe that he has lied to me and I believe that on behalf of Viking they are responsible for his actions. If there were indeed tapes of these conversations I would like them to be released to me and if not then I would like request them via a lawyer. I have rights and a person calling to work WITH you should not be treated in such manner. This reflects poorly on Capital One as well as Viking.

Robert led me to believe that we had settled on $800. He threatened me on the phone with higher costs etc., he refused to let me speak with a manager or anyone else in the company and he hung up the phone on me after refusing to let me speak and when I did he tried to make me out to be some kind of a bad guy.

It was near impossible to speak with this person in a professional manner and he terminated the call. I am on the phone trying to work something out I feel that when he was called on his tactics and got offended so he ran from the issue and hung up on me.

Viking collection rep

AUTHOR: Stacey - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, October 03, 2008

Good lord - learn to spell and use punctuation
Guess the reason you work for this bottom feeder collection agency is because you are either to stupid or to ignorant to get a real job
Send these clowns a cease communications letter via certified mail with return receipt requested
Do not answer the phone - let the machine or voice mail get it
Make a record of all calls - My attorney told me to take pictures of my caller id
Time to stop the bottom feeders
Thanks Robert for good advice

#7 Consumer Suggestion

Sterling example of a typical debt collector employee.

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, October 03, 2008

""if you feel like we treated you like a loser that's because we think your a loser and we treat all you accordingly. So go find a really high building and go skydiving but leave the parachute behind. Oh and one more thing for you people who want to say were the losers cause we do collections and we must not make very much money. I make a whole bunch of money so don't worry about that""

So typical of a debt collector employee.

Here's a hot flash for you. MISTAKES happen! Data processing folks mistype SSNs, address numbers, account numbers and the like. Then there is the sloppy skip tracing, probably performed by someone as you.

I returned to the US in March of 1993 (after living in Germany since 1981.) Since that time I have had debt collectors harass me for the following debts below that were NOT mine. Talking to the debt collectors accomplished NOTHING but cause the telephone calls to increase in frequency.

1. SBC bill for paging service to a KM Enterprises in Rhode Island. I have never lived in RI.

2. Past due electric bill for someone in Syracuse, NY with a similar name as I (middle initial was different.)

3. Bill for back surgery at a local hospital-I have never had back surgery.

Now, Mr. Conviviality, here's how each was resolved:

1. On the telephone, I threatened Vital Recovery Services with prosecution through the Georgia Attorney General's Office when they refused to identify the creditor. I then wrote a letter to Sherman Acquisitions and that was the end of it-they responded with a written apology. Seems that 2 digits of the SSN were transposed and PRESTO, the debt became mine.

2. I had to call the NY State Police (to make a fraud and harassment complaint) and the investigating Sergeant cleared the matter up and told me what happened. (the guy in Syracuse was getting divorced and stopped paying the electric bill.) This was sloppy skip tracing.

3. I wrote a letter to the hospital (creditor) demanding an explanation. I received an apology and their response indicated that the patient ID number was incorrect (I did have hernia surgery at that hospital 3 years PRIOR to this back surgery-my insurance paid for my hernia surgery.) This was a data entry error.

Think twice before you call everyone a "whiner."

It amuses me how you're suddenly responding to RORs about your firm that are well over a year old. Don't you have some skip tracing or collection calls to make?

I have to wonder if your boss is aware of the negative image your nasty remarks are presenting to the public on the internet. Most corporations have a strick policy about employees making public remarks about the firm. Such public communications are usually restricted to someone in the PR or communications department and violating such a corporate policy may result in termination of the violator's employment.

#6 UPDATE Employee

A response to you losers in collections

AUTHOR: Boognation - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, October 02, 2008

First let me say I am a employee at Viking collections in AZ and I want to respond to all these reports these whiners have wrote on here. First of all anytime you get information look at the source its coming from. In this case these people are all losers that are in collections and whining cause they didn't like how the bill collector treated them. Well here's an idea Einstein...pay your bills when your suppose to and you wont have to deal with bill collectors. Before an account even gets to our office you have to ignore the original creditor for 6months without any kind of payment. So for everyone on here with the "oh poor me" attitude get over it and maybe own up to your responsibilities and then you wont ever be in collections. Also were not customer service...you had your chance with customer service and you blew them off for 6 months so we don't need to kiss your a*s and rub your belly so your happy with the call. Your a loser and sometimes you need to be reminded of that. And don't blame the economy for you defaulted on your loan or credit card because were all in the same economy but there are still people that are responsible and pay their bills like they agreed to. If you don't make enough money then get a second job. Maybe if you took the time you sat on your a*s and cried about how bad life is and got another job you wouldn't be so broke. I live in the same economy as you all and i still pay every single won of my bills. Now why can I do it and you cant? Cause I'm not a loser and I own up to what I agreed to and if it came to where I couldn't support my family I would do something about it instead of getting on a website and complaining. So in conclusion if you don't want to deal with a bill collector then pay your bills..if you cant pay your bills then do something about that situation. But there are always going to be you whiners that would rather get on a website and cry so everyone knows your not happy about how you were treated. Well my advice to you is this...if you feel like we treated you like a loser that's because we think your a loser and we treat all you accordingly. So go find a really high building and go skydiving but leave the parachute behind. Oh and one more thing for you people who want to say were the losers cause we do collections and we must not make very much money. I make a whole bunch of money so don't worry about that. Actually it would make you sick how much we make cause the world is full of belly rubbing whining babies and the job security is wonderful. And your the one getting collection calls cause you cant pay your bills. I can pay mine..so who is the loser here? Yes that's correct its you.

Do NOT pay them

AUTHOR: Dave - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, November 15, 2005

You need to stop payment on that check if you can.
Then, you need to send them a certified letter demading that they verify this debt to you in writing, showing proof that it is yours, and, how much the original debt is for.

They have to verify the debt in writing. Why don't you call Capital One and pay them off directly? No collection agency can add interest to a debt. It is illegal. You need to settle this debt with Capital One, not Viking.

#1 Consumer Suggestion

The way Viking works

AUTHOR: John - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, November 15, 2005

When I had a problem with these yo-yo's -- harassing phone calls from some wuss named Justin over a debt I didn't owe in the first place, I did a little background on Viking Southwest. They have a big ad for collectors to work for them, promising them big commissions from deadbeats who defaulted on their credit cards (talk about profiling people). To them, you're nothing more than a commission; they're not really professional bill collectors whose job is to first establish the validity of the debt and then see what they can work out with you.

They can't record calls without your consent (or, if they do, the recordings cannot be used as evidence against you), they can't charge you interest, and they can't rescind an offer once you've agreed (they can rescind if you tell them you'll get back to them).

This guy made a number of threats that were violations of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. If it were me, I'd simply report them to the Federal Trade Commission www.ftc.gov. What happens is that the FTC is overburdened with sour grapes complaints from people who really did default on legitimate debts and are mad because someone pursued them for it. This makes it hard for people with legitimate complaints about federal violations to get through. But if they get enough complaints about one agency, they'll come down on them. That's why everyone who's had a run in with the wimpoids at Viking should file formal complaints.
