I recieved a phone call from (202) 355-6750 saying I have been randomly selected for grant money of $8,400. The man claimed he was with the department of US Treasury grant department. He said 20,000 random people a year are selected to recieve this money who have no criminal history. He had a thick Indian accent so that seemed weird. I gave him my all of my debit card info. He said I had to call his senior account executive with a 5 digit confirmation number. I called him and he told me I had to pay a one time "transaction" fee of $211 that would be used towards some charity of sorts. He used my zip code and told me I had to go to a local kmart and to call him when I got there. Somehow through them I would be doing a wire transfer through a company called Western Union. He told me to go there immediately. I hung up and started googling. This website came up with counts of others feeling unsure about this "free money." On wikipedia under Western Union, it had a section about scams. It said to never transfer money to someone you have not met in person. This was my biggest red flag. I called a number through my bank and explained this story. They told me it sounds like a scam. I canceled my card and a new one will be coming in the mail with different info. Has anyone actually sent in the "transaction fee" before that got a similar call? Just seems too good to be true.
