FIX TO SBC DSL PROBLEMS

AUTHOR: Chris - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, October 02, 2004

If you have problems with the SBC DSL, all you have to do is download Enternet 300. It get's better for win XP users, you never even have to install the crappy CD and all the shitty components it comes with.....just use the network connection you have on your XP...all you need is the sbc username and a password and you should be done. Then you can configure it to start-up automatically or you can have a desktop shortcut which you can use to connect, it gets you connected in less than 5 seconds. Leave the CONNECTION MANAGER crap alone.

I wish I could give you guys the support here but I am too lazy to type. So for XP users, remove all the crap you got from the CD and call customer support and specifically ask them to help you connect using the network connection that is already built into your windows XP (works perfect as long as you have access to the main username and password.)

Non-XP users, remove all the SBC bull (esp. the connection manager) and call them and specifically tell them you only want to connect using the enternet 300 software.

They have a new modem/router called the 5100B. This works like a router and you will never need to download the CD. You connect using the ip address of 192.168.0.1, all you need is your username and password and boom.....connected with no additional software. To get this new modem for free, just call to cancel (if your contract is almost up) and then renew and they will send you brand new equipment for free. You know how they do to catch you in those ridiculous 1 year contracts and $200 cancellation fees.
SBC works super if you know your way around the computer. GOOD LUCK.

Mozilla Pop-Up Blocking

AUTHOR: Mellissa - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, September 24, 2004

Jason, if you're using free Mozilla instead of SBC's browser (which is an awesome solution to crappy SBC DSL speed and dropped IP issues), it's probably Mozilla FireFox that you're using. The latest version FireFox 0.9.3 and it completely ROCKS. Upgrade to it if you've not already done so.

Did you know that you can install what are called "Extensions" that will enable your copy of FireFox to do lotsa cool stuff? This stripped-browser model is one of my favorite aspects of the project. This model allows you to install a compact browser w/o all the crap that you never use BUT you can still easily install "Extensions" that do JUST the things you want. TOO COOL! Pop-up blocking is one available "Extension".

From within FireFox, go to "Tools" --> "Extensions" --> "Get More Extensions" --> and when your browser opens to http://update.mozilla.org/extensions/?application={ec8030f7-c20a-464f-9b0e-13a3a9e97384} you can begin to learn about Mozilla FireFox "Extensions".

If you have trouble with this, I'll try to help you out. (irishdazeatyahoodotcom) LONG LIFE FIREFOX!

biggest problem was the CD and the software

AUTHOR: Wayne - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, March 25, 2004

I have had little problems with SBC Yahoo service.
The biggest problem was the CD and the software.

Once I got a simple router ($50 SMC) I no longer needed the connection manager, which caused memory drain, and used the setting in the router to have always-on internet.

The router's firewall makes a good companion to any software firewall.

It's still cheaper than cable Modem in Kansas City.

Support by phone is always hit and miss. The first person you usually talk to is a breain dead itiot reading from a scripted manual and knows nothing about real trouble-shooting.

It helps to keep SBC Yahoo but use Mozilla as your browser

AUTHOR: John - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, March 12, 2004

I have SBC Yahoo DSL Service, too, and am not happy with it. Lately their browser freezes after going to a few websites. Customer Service told me that they're working on fixing the problem.

What I'm doing now is using SBC Connection Manager to connect to the Internet but then using Mozilla as my browser. (Mozilla is free.) This has been working well. I haven't learned yet how to block pop-up adds when using Mozilla but I think it can be done.

(I don't know if it's relevant but I'm using Windows 98 Second Edition.)

SBC is evil. SBC Yahoo service is poorly deployed and overpriced

AUTHOR: Gary - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, November 12, 2003

I own a business and use SBC's DSL with fixed IP to monitor my clients network elements and for regular browsing, email and other services. I am also a telecomunications engineer with 25 years of prfessional expiencr designing and deploying telecommunications networks including Metropolitan Area Networks designed to support the deploymwnt of DSL services. SBC uses DSLAM's from a French company known as Alcatel which makes the poorest equipment in its class. They also oversubscribe their facilities and have a poorly designed backbone. The network core is significantly underengineered for the number of subscribers on the network.

Recently I have been unable to even get a DNS server that isn't getting regularly hammered. I can't access my E-mail from Earthling and from my own server because they have that service block3ed.

I had Sprint DSL before they got driven out of the market by SBC's predatory pricing. I can't run VOIP becuse the jitter and delay on the network are worst than any of the cable modem services thay used to ridicule in there advertising.

SBC is evil. Satan is alive and well and headquartered in San Antonio Texas at SBC HQ. I hate the service and hate SBC. Unfortunately they control DSL. I have a plan for wide deployment of W-CDMA wireless broadband that would deploy asymetrical 5 M of native ethernet (DSL is based on ATM framing) for less than $10 a month. Ask me how. IT has a high upfront costbut s**t, it works.

How To Fix This

AUTHOR: Binary - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, September 25, 2003

I am assuming you installed the CD they gave you for the Internet Service. If you did, please uninstall all of that as it is not needed, and only slows your computer down. If you are using anything other then XP for an Operating System you will still need Enternet300 off of the CD. The other stuff is just there to make the transition from AOL for the newbies. Also, if you have any problems with SBC you can visit there support forum over at http://www.dslreports.com/forum/ilec,am

The support there is often rated much better then calling them, and they can actually get things done. Also, try running Spybot S&D and AD-Aware to remove unwanted spyware that may also be generating pop-ups and other intrusive ads into your websurfing. I hope this helps you out a bit, and if you need any other info just post your questions below.

Just a side note: I don't work for or even support SBC, but if you know what you're doing, you can make the service work for you... besides, they are the only ISP to offer 6mb down/608kb up in this area for under $100.

Sincerely,
