I called and asked for a plumber from the Yes Air & Plumbing company in Las Vegas to come to my home to give me a quote on a repair for a leaking shower valve stem. They took all of 2 minutes to sit down and wirte me an estimate to make their repair. I was told if I purchased an annual preseason repair program it was only $300.00 a year, and then I was given a quote for the repair at $1,621.00 and was told if I purchased the annual preseason check system program the quote for the repair would only be $1,458.00. (Note; their regular price for a tune- up or quick inspection / visit are normally $69.00 two or 3 imes a year); where I went to school that is only about $210.00 and not their Special $300.00 plus - annual program special!
I almost told them at least Jesse James used a gun when he robbed people; but, i figured they already knew that I knew what they were doing when I made my response to them (i will fix it myself for much - much less thank you). I got the feeling they thought since I was a senior Citizen (close to 70); that I would jump and pay them what ever they asked to stop the leaking brass value. I told them I had been aoutstanding handyman years before they had been born and I know how little work was needed to make the inexpensive repair; I wished them well and showed them my front door. I have serious breathing problems not serious Brain Problems!!
If you know anyone who ever has this kind of problem try doing this before you call any Plumber out for a quote or a service call cost to you (this case they did not attempt to ask for one, ask a good Handymand to help you). Go to an auto parts store (like Auto Zone - like i did). Buy a tube of J-B waterweld (use to be called liquod weld ( it was used to repair holes in mufflers) take it home turn off the water (the valve to your water meter - on the City Side (if a problem occurs with the valve it will be the Cities problem to fix it and not yours as the owner) in the sidewalk. Remove the shower handle and remove the valve (valve stem cartarage) inside the Brass Valve, that holds the leaking valve that turns your hot and cold water on and off. An inexpensive tool at either Home Depot or Lowes is needed to remove the valve inside the Brass housing (see below). Once the inside steam is removed you should clean the inside of the brass valve until clean and dry. Then apply a small amount of the Waterweld around the inside surface area of the brass fitting valve, until that area that feels a little ruff and pitted becomes or feels smooth. Wait about 25 to 30 minutes to 1 hour (with the water still off) go back and clean the brass fitting (valve ) with some fine wet and dry med-fine sand paper until the surface in nice and smooth, take the valve stem valve you had removed for this repair and put a little lubracant around the o-ring (s) and slip it back in place. Replace it the same way you removed it; but you will not need the valve stem tool to put it back into place. Remember to use a sturdy small string or thread to replace the horseshoe that holds the stem in place of the brass valve (it has a small hole at the center top of it). This should be done when removing the stem and replaceing it (if you do not do this step you may end up haivng to make one or more trips back to buy more (it will often try to jump out and end up in between the walls).
Your total repair cost will only come to about a total of about $30.00, if no new valve stem is needed to be installed. $17.50 for the moen valve stem puller, about $6.00 for some med-fine wet dry sandpaper and about $8.40 for the tube of J-B water weld tube. A new moen valve stem will cost you around $50.00 at Home Depot or Lowes if it needs to be replaced. That is it! Ask any Handyman worth his salt how to do the above and save your self about $1,600.00 from the YES MAN CAN Company. Don't be duped by scam artists and always get a second or third estimate on everything you need done; "EVERYTHING" - EVERYTIME! Now take a Vacation you have earned it - a savings of $1600.00 or more.
