Target's return policy is outrageous. I bought a DVD and when I got home it would not play in my DVD player. I tried other DVDs I bought that same day at other stores as well as DVDs I have purchased sometime ago just to make sure it was not my DVD player. All of the DVDs played fine EXCEPT for the one I just purchased at Target.

I took it back and exchanged it for the same title. AGAIN, it would not play. Checking the disc I found there were smears and scatches all over it which I even showed the employee. I demanded my money back.

They stated because of copyright laws, industry policy....blah blah blah....BULLSH^^^^T. Copyright laws do not dictate store policy on refunding money for defective merchandise.

I told them I would not leave until I was issued a refund for defective merchandise. Finally after an hour of arguing with the manager I got my refund.

Yes, I had my receipt. And yes other stores like Best Buy and Borders Books are more than happy to refund money for a defective DVD.

After getting my refund from Target, I purchased the same title at Borders books and it is also defective. They happily refunded my money and pulled the remaining titles off the shelf.

WHY CAN'T TARGET UNDERSTAND SOMETHING? CUSTOMER SERVICE.

Oh yeah, if you read another part of Target's return policy, you can't return anything they consider 'collectible'. Now that is vague. They should change their policy to 'Expect less. NO REFUNDS OR EXCHANGES'

Any time there is a recall for a proven defective item, Target posts it near their guest service counter and does refunds without recipt.

The fact that this did not happen leads me to think that it was not proven defective. Also, with a valid recipt you can always exchange your movie for the SAME TITLE.
the fact that they told you you could not makes me think that you did not want the same title. otherwise no copywrite infringment laws would be broken.

At some point its your responsibility as a consumer to be responsible enough to take care of your recipts. Even if they would not have taken it back...call the manufacturer, they also except defective dvd's back.

once again...

ONLY FOR THE EXACT SAME MOVIE/GAME.

READ THE COMPLAINT AGAIN TARGET EMPLOYEE!!!

ITS JUST LIKE A TARGET EMPLOYEE NOT TO LISTEN (IN THIS CASE READ). I HAD THE RECEIPT AND EVEN SHOWED THE EMPLOYEE THE SCRATCHED SURFACE OF THE DVD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THEY OUT RIGHT REFUSED TO DO ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!! JUST LIKE TARGET THEY DON'T GIVE A CARE. EVEN CUSTOMERS OF THE BRIDAL REGISTRY HAVE HAD PROBLEMS RETURNING ITEMS WITH A GIFT RECEIPT FROM TARGET AND STILL TARGET WILL NOT TAKE IT BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

EVER WONDER WHY TARGET STORES ARE AS EMPTY AS KMART?

JUST THIS WEEK I RETURNED A VACUUM TO WAL-MART THAT DID NOT PERFORM AS EXPECTED WITH A RECEIPT AND THEY CHEERFULLY TOOK IT BACK WHILE I CHOOSE A DIFFERENT BRAND OF VACUUM WHICH I AM NOW HAPPY WITH. TARGET WOULD NEVER DO THAT. THAT IS WHY I NEVER EVER WILL STEP FOOT NEAR A TARGET AGAIN IN MY LIFE AND THAT IS WHY WAL-MART HAS MY BUSINESS! AND I DO SPEND A GREAT DEAL OF MONEY AT STORES THAT GIVE GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THAT IS NOT TARGET.

WHAT A JOKE FOR A RETAILER.

Defective? Riiiiight ...

I find it hard to believe that two DVDs were both defective. At any rate, Target did not manufacture said DVDs and so therefore you are scapegoating the wrong party. What prevented you from exchanging the DVD and inspecting it before leaving the store??? How is the store to know that you did not scratch it at home, and then try to return it claiming 'it was like that when I opened it'? I find it fishy that you are demanding a cash refund. At any rate, NO STORE issues refunds for DVDs, CDs, or other types of recorded material. NONE.

People like you

People like you think you are always right and expect special treatment. Some retailers risk it when they return items that are under the federal copyright law. If you open it you own it. Target is great at following this policy and is by far the industry leader in following government set practices, etc.
Target didnt make the DVD you idiot. Why is it their fault. It is the manufacturers fault. Again once you open it you own it. How simple???

I would have called the police if you were in my store and had you removed. Actually I would have gone and grabbed five DVD's and put them in a play to get you a copy that worked. If after five I would have given your money back.

I totally agree with you, Target sucks

I completely agree with you on how awful Target's customer service is. They are absolutely the worst store I have ever dealt with. They hire nothing but a bunch of stupid high schoolers or people who are older and should have a real job, but because they screwed up their lives when they were younger have no education and have to work somewhere like that. It is only on occasion that you find someone who actually has a clue what they are doing and I will tell you, it is NOT at Target. They are inconsiderate, unhelpful and have no customer service. I completely understand your story and agree that they are absolutely horrid, I promise that you are not alone.

All these people who work at Target are just bitter at life because they know their job and store sucks.

I would suggest writing a nasty letter to both the store you went to and to corporate. I doubt they will do anything, but hey, at least they get both our letters and realize that they need to quit being so awful.

And regardless as to how a customer treats an employee, the employee should ALWAYS treat a customer with kindness and courtesy, it doens't matter if they think that the person is wrong or nasty. The employee is a representative of their store and they had BETTER behave and treat everyone in the best manner. If it weren't for the customer there would be no business. Too bad Target doesn't do this.

That wench from Idaho Falls must be paid by Target to post useless, harrassing comments. SHe is SO nasty!!! She posted on my story and decided to get personal. Well, if anyone has been to Idaho Falls where she is from, you would understand why she is such a nasty whore. For one, it's Idaho. That should say enough. People who are from there are so bizarre, it's like they live in a tiny, desert filled bubble and have never left the state to see the rest of the world so they have nothing better to do than to harrass others that they are just jealous of. Almost everyone single person in Idaho Falls is white trash. I swear I have never seen such a bunch of foul people all in one city, and the only decent ones are those that moved there from out of state.

DVD Return

As a former employee of 'The Best Company Ever' (Not, not, not) Target, I would just like to let everyone know that anything (Including dvds) is infact returnable at any given time at Target. Regardless of what the big sign behind the return counter says, or what your receipt says, Target managers have the power to return anything that the register will except as a return. (There are certain cases where the register will not except the return, those are few and far between). But a Target manager, otherwise known as Executive Managers, aswell as the individual department managers have the power to override company policy to satisfy the customer.

I am by no means pushing anyone to either shop at Target or Wal-Mart, (I worked for both and think they both suck), But if you are going to shop at either one, go in prepared. Target can a will change the price of something within a 5 dollar amount (Push for it and let them know you know they will and can), Anything is returnable, the problem with the dvds doesn't revolve around copyright laws, it revolves around the fact that quite a few dvds and video games were shipped from manufacturers and publishers with blank disks in the case. The games and dvds were stolen prior to shipping to retailers, so ofcourse after they arrived and were sold the retailers had to take the bite for the bogus dvds and video games.

But again the big thing is that the managers can return anything, but unfortunately like others have said, Target will and does hire pretty much anyone. With the dishonest people that they hire, they hire an equal number of yes men and butt kissers. So it breaks down like this, A Target store manager and Executive managers get bonuses, returns cut into that percentage of money that their bonus is calculated from, just like overtime (Which is why you can't find anyone that works there during certain times of the year) So the more returns a manager does, and everything is tracked by their employee number, and I mean everything, the more it cuts into the end of the month bonus. And no I am not a loser or didn't make it through high school and couldn't get a better job and had to work for Target and Wal-Mart, I actually liked the fast paced enviroment and enjoyed working with the public.

But again the biggest problem with Target is they will and do hire anybody they can. Not to mention that the majority of their Executive managers are hired fresh out of or while they are still in college and the majority of those don't have any real world experience, so when they have to handle a problem it's like a deer caught in the headlights. Hope this has been informative and helpful to someone.

Stupid customers

I worked for Target for two years and customers like you are what make them hate their jobs, not because they were too stupid to get an education. You come in there with an attitude that they are below you because they work for a retail store and that just makes you a jerk.

For all Target knows you could buy a DVD, take it home, burn in onto your computer and then bring it back for a refund claiming it was defective. No not everyone does this, but some people do. And why would you be rude and nasty to someone who is just doing their job? We're trained not to take opened electronics and then get yelled at for not doing it. Anytime a manager gives in and refunds your money, all they are doing is breaking a copyright law and rewarding you for being an a**hole.

By the way, I've seen the defective DVD thing a lot and usually it's caused by a defective batch of DVDs from the manufacturer. In which case the only option you have is to get a return from them or wait until they ship a new order in.

Ctripp you are the stupid one!!

Ctripp you are the stupid one. You just admitted that Target does infact receive defective DVDs! By the way DVDs today are copy proctected with sophisticated encoding that dvd burning software recognizes and prevents people from copying.

If you read the other comments by Target employees, they agree with me! Target blows as a company.

I did in fact get my money back from them for the defective DVD.

On another occasion I had purchased a DVD from Best Buy and in the middle of it the play froze. I immediately return to the store and without me asking, THEY offered a refund. I politely refused and asked for an exchange for the same title.

You see its companys like Best Buy that when they go the extra mile to satisfy customers the customer will return the courtesy with being polite and wanting to exchange the item, keeping the business in their store.

Stores like Target who treat customers like garbage is what causes customers to treat the employess like garbage.

By the way I do still go to Target on very rare occasions when I do not wish to drive across town to Wal-Mart and each time I entered Target I immediately felt unwelcome. When I checked out each time the cashiers throw the items into the bag instead of placing them in the bag. Why do you think customers hate Target employees? The employees do not treat the customer with respect to begin with. This explains why every Target I drive by every day has a FRACTION of the customers in the parking lot than Wal-Mart.

At Wal-Mart they place items in bags and when I request special bagging for certain items like cleaning products or items I don't want crushed during the trip home they politely do so without complaint and are happy to do so. The cashiers at Wal-Mart even go as far as to double wrap breakables in extra bags WITHOUT me asking to prevent them breaking on the way home. I have yet to see a Target cashier go this far to please a customer.

In fact on trip to Wal-Mart the cashier forget to bag several items and when I called the store several employees went looking around the service desk and the register and found the items. And when I got to the store to pick those items up, I noticed several other items were also missing. Without question Wal-Mart apologized for the inconvenience and replaced the missing items. THAT is customer services. Going the extra mile for the customer and fixing the problem without treating the customer as if they are at fault.

Common courtesy

All the things you've described that the cashiers do for you at Walmart, I've done at Target. The reason I sound so bitter is probably because my job at Target was basically to get yelled at all day. When customers complain, I was the one they called so I got crap for stuff that was beyond my control.

Maybe, and I stress maybe, because again regardless of the super advanced technology that prevents people from copying dvds, there is STILL a copyright law, not a Target law, an actual law, but maybe Target's policies are a little rigid. I don't agree, except for to say that yes, it is unfortunate that even if the entire batch is defective there's nothing we can do. My problem is why people would say such awful things to employees , who you know are actual people, such as calling them stupid, or swearing at them, because they're doing the job they are trained to do. You're not mad at the sixteen year old employee or her 21 year old manager, you're mad at Target, so how does calling the employees mean names help anyone? It makes you look like an ass, makes them feel like crap and nothing gets solved.

By the way, I worked for Walmart too and while I agree that they do in fact bend over backwards for people, they were a horrid company to work for. They treats customers well and employees like crap.

Best Buy's stated return policy on DVDs is the same as Target's.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site//olspage.jsp?type=page&contentId=1117177044087&id=cat12098

'Opened computer software, movies, music and video games can be exchanged for the identical item but cannot be returned for a refund.'

If Best Buy refunded your money for a defective DVD, then they were breaking their own policy. It's not just copying the video, it would be the same as a free rental service if you could get your money back on a regular basis.

Tom, Tom, Tom

'By the way DVDs today are copy proctected with sophisticated encoding that dvd burning software recognizes and prevents people from copying.'

You are far behind in the times. There are multiple pieces of software out there to burn a DVD to your PC, without having to worry about being copy protected.

Now, I'll state that I also hate Target. I don't hate them because of their employees, and their selection. They usually don't have anything I'm looking for, and it's a headache to enter a store, especially with Target's size, and it's not there. By your most recent post, you're making it sound like you're upset because the employees didn't 'place' your items in the bag, but 'threw' them in. Could you explain? If you 'throw' them, they'll only go but so far into the bag. I can promise you, they didn't throw your eggs into a bag, so don't try to pull that story.

Look, if you have a problem with store policy, that's your own problem. It's their policy, and the policy of many other DVD retailers, including Best Buy, Circuit City, and yes, even Wal-Mart. You should probably lay off attacking the employees, as it's not their fault your DVD didn't work. It's not their problem they can't give a refund. It's corporate, and you should address them.

(No, I'm not an employee, nor do I care about Target. I'm just stating the obvious, which Tom has failed to see.)

Defective??

Are you sure it wasn't your DVD player that was the problem? I went through this issue many years ago when I tried buying a new movie...I went through about 4 copies (and I too was angry that they would not refund it, and when they gave me a new one they would open it before they handed it to me so I couldn't get a refund) then I tried the movie on a new player, and it all of a sudden worked. Apparently our DVD player was too old to read that disc from that region.

And yes, I understand that you say it was scratched, but in no way will I believe that every copy you bought was scratched or defective in any other way, especially when you tried other stores. So maybe next time check all possibilities. Oh and next time, maybe open it in the store and check for scratches, that way you save yourself a trip and no one can say you did it, because for all we know, you scratched it yourself, whether accidental or not, and tried to get a refund.

Thank You
