I was having trouble with my Internet in Las Vegas using Cox, so I switched to CenturyLink, which I had heard was providing faster more reliable service. I had a very difficult time getting an actual quote for the monthly service. There was one advertisement offering $29.95 a month for high-speed Internet. I walked into a local Las Vegas CenturyLink office and was about to sign up for that service but the representative there found that I already had CenturyLink for my land line. She said the $29.95 a month for high speed Internet only applied to new CenturyLink customers. Fine, I was ineligible, so I walked out. Meanwhile, I realized that I didn't need a landline any more anyway, so I called CenturyLink to discontinue my phone service, also hoping that I would be considered a new customer soon when I came back to them later to try again to get the $29.95 a month Internet.
The woman who talked to me on the phone asked me why I was discontinuing my service with them so I told her the truth, that I really didn't need a land line any more and that also I was told that new customers would be eligible for $29.95 Internet.
She told me she could arrange it so that I could get high speed Internet right away for the advertised price without having to wait until I became a "new" customer. She claimed she worked as a Las Vegas promotions person and therefore she had the power to give me this rate despite what the rep told me in the CenturyLink store. I asked her a lot of questions and in the end decided to take a chance that I wouldn't be ripped off.
I decided to go with the rented modem for $6.95 a month rather than buy my own. She didn't mention anything about a shipping and handling fee of $22.99 for the modem, but nevertheless, that's what I was charged on my first bill for a device weighing about 1 pound and being shipped probably from Phoenix to Las Vegas. Obviously I was ripped off on that shipping and handling charge. I know it probably only cost them around $3 to ship it.
But a more fraudulent ripoff than the shipping charge is their refusal to give me the prorated promotional rate for the partial 1st month of service which turned out to be about 5/6 of a month. The way they billed me was to charge $61.95 for my first full month and apply a promotional discount for that month of $32.00, which makes the service for that month come to $29.95. But they also billed me for the partial month in the amount of $51.62. But nowhere on the bill was a credit for $26.66 like their should have been. I don't have a problem paying one month in advance, but I do have a problem with being billed $51.62 for a partial month when the real rate is supposed to be $29.95 for a full month. It's unfair. It's fraudulent billing.
I called the CenturyLink billing support phone number and the lady there told me they "can't" give me a promo for the partial month because the promo is for exactly 12 months and it will be applied to my first full 12 months. The first lady on the phone, the one I signed up with when I started the service never informed me they would do this.
I am ready to get involved in a class action suit because I'm sure there are thousands of other customers who are getting ripped off this way.
