I emailed them WELL WITHIN the three day period - -literally within hours of signing up, and they refused to refund it because the address I listed at my parents' was not in the state I am a legal resident of (IL). I will now need to contact the Chicago Times about their predatory behavior in a time of COVID (for god's sake) and forward it to the attorney general's office (thank God for being a law student, I guess). Ridiculous!

Since you are a "Law Student", perhaps you can tell us the SPECIFIC law requires them to give you a refund if you cancel within 3 days?
I just hope you aren't referring to the 3-Day right to cancel. As that only applies to Door-To-Door sales and Timeshares.
By the way what type of Membership did you have?

My legal residence is NOT my parents' residence (which I am currently at due to COVID), as I have my student ID, school schedule, etc. to prove it. And in fact, my last tax return was filed in Maryland -- ALSO a state covered by the 3 day refund policy!!
