Greyhound Bus Lines350 N St Paul St, Dallas, Texas United States of America
My 60 year old husband needed to travel from our second residence, located in an isolated mountain town in New Mexico. There is no plane, train or bus travel out of there. But a local teachers group had contracted with a local transit system to take a group of them down to the next town over so they could teach there. That town 50 miles away had a gas station where you could board a greyhound. I suggested he take that bus to Deming, New Mexico where he could board the Greyhound. He agreed. I called Greyhound to request purchasing a ticket that he could pick up. They said as there was no station there he would have to give the driver cash and pick up the ticket at the next city where there was a "station". It seemed easy enough. As our neighborhood had recently had some property crimes and vandalism he was loathe to have it empty without a car in the driveway so he opted to get up and at 4:30 AM he walked with a duffle bag the mile and and half in the middle of winter to the station.
He was able to get to Deming. He had a few hours to wait for the Greyhound but he was able to board he bus, no problems, he gave the driver his money and was told he would pay the rest at his next destination where he would change buses. When he arrived at the next stop which wasn't a station but a Chevron gas station he paid the remainder of the ticket and waited several hours for the next bus. But they wouldn't let him on that bus as it was overbooked. He asked when the next bus was, they said it was around 8 hours but it was usually late so it could be 9 hours. Then they said there was no guarantee that bus wouldn't be full either. So my husband asked for a refund. They refused telling him he had bought a non-refundable ticket. He reminded him that no one had bothered to mention that the ticket was non-refundable or that his seat was not guaranteed when he purchased it. The young man told him he had no authority to refund his money even though he had just sold him the ticket a few hours before.
The waiting area for the next bus is outside on a bench where my husband would have to wait in the middle of winter for 9 hours where he might not get another bus, He was now 110 miles from home, no credit cards on him to rent a car ( I had them all). So after hours of talking to Greyhound call center customers I was forced to rent a car, as my daughters car was in the shop, I had given her my car to use. I would have to drive the rental 240 miles one way to go get my husband. I was supposed to be taking my teen daughter to the doctors to check to see if she had a concussion from a fall. She assured me that she was probably okay and they would have to do an MRI anyway to see if she had a concussion. She would call me if she had any serious medical issues. There is a lot of dead cell phone zones in New Mexico so I left with some trepidation. I couldn't pick my car up miles a hour when I could, without stopping. I had 50-60 mile a hour winds, rain, snow and hail on the way down. I arrived at 9:30 PM I picked up my husband almost 10 hours since he had arrived on the bus. It was cold and very windy there. I grabbed a sandwich and drove straight back arriving back in Albuquerque at 2AM. I was exhausted, my hands hurt from gripping the steering wheel. The next day after hours more of explaining to Greyhound they said they might refund the ticket price but not the car rental etc etc... This is the company whose heart is a dead grey and lifeless as the color of their bus lines. I would never travel on Greyhound again.
