In Dec. 2011, I had to purchase 4 new tires for my Trans Am in order to pass inspection.  I usually buy my tires at Discount Tire, but unfortunately they did not have them so I had to go to NTB - Big Mistake !!!   I purchased for "new" BF Goodrich tires from them for $232.00 each along with road hazzard protection.  I am a Private Investigator and was following a subject when it felt like my front wheel fell off.  Luckly, I was only going about 5 mph.  I got out of the car and noticed the front passenger side tire was deflated - flat.  My husband came and changed it for me and the following day took it back to Discount Tire.  I had forgotten that I had purchased these from NTB not Discount.  But luckly - we took it to Discount Tire because we would have never uncovered the problem  The Tire that NTB sold me as "new" was actually 6 years 10 months old when I purchased it in Dec. 2011.  Just FYI - the born date for the tire is on the back side, last numbers shown after the DOT numbers.  These showed 0605, which meant they were made the 6th week of 2005 !!  I could not believe this.  So, we checked the other tires.  I could not believe what I found.  The 2 front tires which are normally the most important, both had dates of 0605 - 6 years 10 month old.  The 2 back tires were 19th week of 2007, which was still 4 years 7 months old - but sold as new!  So, took the tire to NTB to speak with them.  I had the unfortunate choice of speaking with their ?Manager, Gregory Thurman.  This man started off by telling me that it did not matter how old the tires were - and that these tires were bald.  I told him they were only purchased a year ago and only had 5000 miles - he said there is no way - basically calling me a liar.  I said check the mileage - again he argued with me and said there is no way.  This man was the most rude person I have ever met in my life.  I have been in upper management for more than 25 years, and there is no way I would have ever addressed a customer, or anyone else like I was addressed by this person.  He ended up telling me that I had the wrong size tire on there and claimed these were drag racing tires.  I told him - "You are the ones that put them on the car - if they were wrong - why did you install them?"  So, he claimed to have called Michelin to tell them and they offered me 95.99 per tire off to change them and said to put a much smaller size tire on there.  I have been running this size tire on my car for 10 years.  My Yokohoma's and other tires have lasted 5 years each and I have the documents to prove this.  I contacted other tire dealers, including another NTB dealer in the area asking how old do you allow tires to remain on shelf before destroying.  Discount Tire said 3 years, the other NTB dealer told me no more than 4 years 5 months, and another Goodyear Dealer told me 4 years.  I read the research and know that a 6 year old tire, in Texas hot, humid weather has basically started falling apart on the inside.  Plus - this was verified because with only 5000 miles on this tire, it should never had been bald!!   I have contacted the corporate office of NTB and am waiting for their reply - I won't hold my breath !     Please make sure everyone knows to look for the "born on date" on their tires.   One very odd thing is that in an ABC 20/20 report, British Rubber Manufacturers Association which include Goodyear, Firestone and Michelin, warned in 2001 that "unused tires should not be put into service if they are over 6 years old"   Funny - the call that the manager of NTB made to Michelin claimed that Michelin said nothing about the age of these tires which was almost 7 years old.   Buyers beware -I was only traveling 5mph, but had just exited the toll way where I was doing about 70mph - I would have been killed.~~~~~~~~

NTB Employees Do Their Job, Not To Make You Happy

AUTHOR: MechanicJay - (United States of America)

POSTED: Sunday, January 13, 2013
I have been an employee of NTB in Missouri for the past three years. Now, I do not agree with putting on a 6 year old tire and letting you drive down the street with that tire. I do absolutely agree with putting that tire on and letting you know. just because there are those tires in that warehouse dosent mean they are exposed to the elements.

Those tires are kept in that warehouse for a reason; keep them out of the elements. you have to keep tires not in use in around 70 ish degrees, at about 60 percent relative humidity. Now, on to what someone was talking about on 20/20 when someone stated that tires could not be mounted on a vehicle that are more than 6 years old, is not entirely true. in fact, it is 100% false now. i have tires on my car that are 8 years old and others that are 2 months old and i honestly cannot tell the difference. And that is coming from a mechanic with 20 years under his belt. The only mistake you might have made is you failed to look at your receipt, they might have made a note on there that said the tires were older.
