I bought 3 beautifully colored young rats for pets and to save them from being fed to snakes.  They were all sold as one gender (males).  Later, when they got bigger, I found that  one was a female -- and she was pregnant.  She soon had eleven baby rats.  I did not have accommodations for a mobilehome full of rats.  I kept her separate from the other original rats, and as soon as her young quit nursing I returned to Petsmart with the eleven young rats.  I neither asked for a refund nor any type of compensation for their guarenteed male rats.  I only asked them to take the young rats off my hands.  These were healthy, clean, and colored from white to champaigne & mixtures thereof.  Petsmart refused to take the rats, even though they caused the problem.  They are still selling rats ...  just not the ones from my home.    I had to euthanize the beautiful young rats with carbon-dioxide, although it was a quick death, it made me sick.

Recentlly, one or more employees from this same Petsmart turned me in to Animal Control for animal abuse.  I was wondering why they were looking so hard at my license plate.  They said that I was abusing my dog by over-using her bark control collar.  My dog, being a Catahula service-dog, is with me 24 hours per day; she goes everywhere with me.  I only put her no-bark collar on when I go into Petsmart, mainly because she barks at the other dogs in there and the shock collar is the only way to stop her: I've tried all the lessor methods and they just don't work.  Mesa County Animal Control (services) wanted to inspect my dog for injuries from the shock collar.  These are the same people who keep dogs and cats in very small cages or kennels and then kills about 8,000 every year.  I had to go to my vet and pay for an inspection of my dog's throat & neck to verify that there was not the slightest injury of any kind.  I'll have to go to another vet later today for further proof  against the claims made against me.   A decent person would have talked to me first about their perception of cruelty.

expect petsmart to take them? Secondly how hard did you try to find them homes? how many Rat owner forums did you post msgs on? Craiglists? Ebay Classifieds? Or hell you could have just accepted the fact that rats are prey and provided some snake or meet eating lizard owners with some cheap and healthy food.

Also sexing rats isn't that hard. A simple look and you would have known one was female.

I bought the young male rats to prevent them from being fed to snakes

AUTHOR: Kagemusha - (United States of America)

POSTED: Wednesday, January 04, 2012

I do not have a pet snake, for the very reason that I do not want to feed live animals to another (a snake for example).  That is part of the two-fold reason I bought the male rats i.e. to prevent them from being fed to a snake.

I never asked for a refund because that would not solve the over-population of rats problem.

The no-bark shocking collar only shocks when the dog barks.  My dog can make many other vocal sounds (and she does, as part of her Catahula breading is New Guinea Singing Dog), but she knows that when she barks, she will receive a shock from the collar.  She demonstrates this by complaining whenever I put the collar on her.  Her breed is somewhat stubborn, so she starts to bark at some other dogs anyway, once in a while.  I do not control the collar after it is put on -- she does.  I only put the collar on her in Petsmart as this is the only place she exhibits this bad behaviour.

Some people put  no-bark shocking collars on their dogs, and leave these collars on continuously for weeks, causing burns  or sores on their dog's throat: that is 'overuse of a shocking collar'.

The same people spying on me to get my license plate, should also have seen me put the collar on or take it off when I returned to my truck.

The number of animals killed at Mesa Connty Animal Services is posted for the public in several places, including the local newspaper.

What?

- So feeding them to your pet snake doesn't make you sick but this does?  Not saying that you do or do not have a right to feed them to your snake, just pointing out how you seem to be a bit contradictory in your statements.

They said that I was abusing my dog by over-using her bark control collar
- Notice a key word "over-using".  So it does not appear that they have a problem with the collar but how many times you were using it.  Granted this is up to interpretation as to what make it excessive, and no one here knows the exact situation.  But apparently it was enough for them to report you an for the County to take it seriously.

These are the same people who keep dogs and cats in very small cages or kennels and then kills about 8,000 every year

- Where do you get this number from?

Now, back to your original complaint.  I could not find any place where they "guarantee" a certain sex of rats, so where did you get this and what does the guarantee provide for in writing?  Does it provide that they will accept the baby rats back?  Does it provide for any monetary compensation?   Because if they are not following through with what is in writing you have a very valid complaint, but if what you "think" their guarantee says is not what it actually says then that is a different matter.
