Phony flight delay issued to save money.
A while ago I booked a flight on Southwest Airlines.
The flight was overbooked by more than 10 seats so I asked to be placed on the bump list, (i.e., to give up my seat for a later flight and a free ticket for later use.)
Fifteen minutes before boarding they announced that the flight was delayed due to bad weather at the destination airport.
After about 15 ticket holders immediately rebooked on later flights and left the boarding area, within 5-10 minutes. A few mintues later they then announced that the weather had all of sudden cleared up and the flight would be boarding on (or near) the scheduled time after all.
What do you know - - all of sudden they no longer had an overbooked airline and no bumps were needed.
When I arrived at the destination airport I asked the SWA gate agent about the "bad weather" at their aiport - - she did not have a clue about any bad weather and stated that there had been no delays - - the sky had been sunny and clear all day, and the airpost was not backed up at all.
This was a systematic effort to abuse customers to keep costs down. SWA purposely overbooks flights to take advantage of the no-shows and keep their cash. But when they all show up to fly they then find a "weather delay" to deal with the problem instead of issuing expensive bump credits.

any time I can I will give up my seat and get a free ticket..... good for me. and if they end up getting me on the plane even better.
but I know I loose my ticket...... if there was not an airline out there that over sold a flight they would not be doing business.....
Go out to eat and have a reservation at 8p..... you still will not get to set to eat for a while..... thats over booked..... it happen everywhere.
even today American Airlines started to fly out of Love Field to Mo. and they canceled flights before they ever got started.....

Maybe the weather was just fine at your destination, but what about all the weather you have to fly through in between to get there?

Paul,
In response to your comment "SWA purposely overbooks flights to take advantage of the no-shows and keep their cash." I would have to correct you in saying that EVERY SINGLE AIRLINE overbooks their flights because they always have a number of people that don't show up. If everyone who has a reservation would actually show up to their flight on-time and on the correct date then the airlines wouldn't have the need to overbook. I fly quite frequently on different airlines and I hear these type of comments all the time.
Cesar is right, you're upset because you didn't get your free ticket. Relize this, everything that is given out for free eventually comes back to us the consumers and we'll end up paying for it! Would you rather pay a low fare for your paid ticket or eventually pay a much higher price because the airline had to raise their prices for giving out too many free tickets?

Paul,
First of all i'm sorry that you had a bad encounter with the Southwest airlines. I travel frequently on this airline on business and everytime I get a seat. The impression that I am getting is that you are mad because you did not get the free ticket. I ask myself, You actually got to your destination a couple minutes late. I once missed a flight on this airline and I want you to know that they will put you on a later flight or they will give you credit on your next purchase(If you buy a nonrefundable ticket). If you don't believe me call 1-800-IFL-YSWA(1-800-435-9792) or go to the website www.southwest.com So don't get mad for not getting a free ticket. One more thing, when I am at the airport and they announce that a flight is delayed I don't see 15 people change their flights. Well good luck on your future travels.
