1st Choice Facilities Services Just plain refuses to pay invoice! Sarasota Florida

1st Choice Facilities Services is a maintenance company that services (or used to service) a variety of retail stores like Yankee Candle, Lane Bryant, check'n Go, Blockbuster, etc. They subcontract independant handymen and other specialized companies to handle maintenance issues and provide services to the retail stores. The contract clearly states that they will pay you within thirty days. They hired me for a small job, which I completed on time and perfectly. They are not disputing this. So I expected payment within a month. After forty days, I called to inquire about payment. I talked to Dawn in accounting. She told me that other companies were behind in paying them, so that they couldn't pay me. I told her that regardless of their problems with other companies, the contract between my company and theirs was for payment within thirty days. She said that they weren't going to pay. I told her that they were leaving me no choice but to sue them. She got irate and started yelling at me, saying that I was threatening them. I told her that utilizing the legal system to collect money owed was in no way a threat, but that I truly would sue if they don't intend on paying the bill. She hung up on me.

I've been in this business a long time, and these maintenance companies come and go like the wind. They get a few big contracts, get a bunch of jobs going, collect from the retailer, and leave all the people they owe money to hanging and claim bankruptcy. I've seen it time and time again. These guys seem to be following the same playbook. This is the first, and obviously last time I will be working for them.
