My account with CapitalOne Visa has been an ongoing struggle. January '09 I contacted them regarding fraudluent charges on my account. The company reps treated me like I was the criminal. My integrity and honesty was challenged on several occassions. After talking with no less than seven reps on five different occassions, the issue was resolved. Resolution also included two mailings and multiple forms to complete to challenge the fraudulent charges. During this process, I did request my Rewards account refund and that my account be closed. Each of the three times I made this request, the representative on the phone informed me that my request could not be granted, because I needed a minimum of 30 days inactivity on my account to close it.....and my request for payment on my Rewards account was never refunded. I was told that requesting refund of my Rewards monies could be affected by my fraud investigation, and that it was not in my best interest to request refund at that time. My account had no additional charges since late February - yet remained open.
I received a refund for merchandise returned in March, and am still owed over $190.00 in additional credit on my account, which has not yet been refunded - and may not be for another 60 days- per CapitolOne today (5/1/09). So, essentially they have violated their own businees practice and rules in closing the account upon request- verbatium - their words, no account can be closed until it has had NO activity for 30 days ....their policy communicated to me on multiple occassions. My account will not be reported to any credit agency as closed for a 30 day period, from today (5/1/09), yet within several minutes of me calling them back regarding the ~$770.00 I am owed for my years of patronage and the Rewards monies I am owed, my account is considered null and void - and I am entitled to no payment or compensation. How convenient for CapitalOne. I understand closing my account to additional charges at my request - and that was the message communicated to me during the phone conversation - as well as the fact that the credit balance I was owed could take up to 60 days to receive, and that my account would not be considered reported or closed to those credit agency's for 30 days. It was also clearly communicated that the account was closed to charging, I fully understood that. But when it comes to monies owed me from CapitalOne, that should not be considered null/void until the account is officially closed, after the 30 day inactive period they choose to enforce when it is to their advantage, and the credit reporting agencies are notified - AND the receipt of the final credit of ~$190.00 refund owed by CapitolOne........ and then 30 days of inactivity. Due to the fact that CapitolOne had communicated to me on multiple occasions that, upon request, the account will remain open until 30 days of inactivity, - I did not consider that there would be refusal to pay the $770.81 due me from my Rewards program. Until, I called and requested what was owed to me
For these reasons, I requested my business association with CapitalOne Visa be discontinued.....and recommend that anyone currently a consumer, or considering becoming a consumer of this company, re-evaluate that decision.

Subject: Rewards Refund

I have had nothing but difficulty with my visa account with your company for over four months. I just closed my account via phone a few minutes ago due to a lack of customer support and assistance that has been accumulating for several months.

I then realized I was owed (YES, OWED AFTER OVER 15 YEARS OF HOLDING A VISA ACCOUNT WITH YOUR COMPANY) OVER $770.00 in Rewards refund.

I IMMEDIATELY phoned to rectify and was told - too bad - you closed your account- YOU ARE NO LONGER ENTITLED TO ANYTHING.

WHAT A POOR WAY TO TREAT A CUSTOMER OF OVER 15 YEARS!! I did hunderds of thousands of dollars of business with this visa over the years, and you profited substantially from that. I am only requesting what I am owed as a result.

I will ensure that my history with your company will be widely distributed throughout any and all electronic means available and dissemenated to the widest possible audience I can reach. This most current treatment just substantiates and supports the reason I chose to close my account
