I sell on EBay. I have been shipping with FedEx ground for 3 years. They were cheaper than UPS and gave me great service. Last week I got charged an extra $7.50 for Additional Handling. I called 1-800-622-1147 and talked to a supervisor about this charge. She told me that my box label had to be scanned by hand and that was the charge. She could not or would not tell me the exact problem. The box may have been torn by them? Or the box could have fallen off the belt and had to be hand scanned by a human? I take great pride in building boxes. I use the best 3" 2mill packing tape money can buy. I use a lot of tape. I can not quote shipping to my ebay customers and them pay and extra $7.50 per shipment because some unnammed person scanned my item. One would think an employee would welcome a break from watching robots and do a little work. I do beleive that someone at FedEx could find out the location and the name of the employee if they wanted.
After 1 hour on the phone I did get her to credit my account the $7.50 Then she told me that this would go on my record of life and may happen again. I am going back to UPS. The UPS cost of this package was .83 cents more. In light of the fact that FedEx is going to lose billions in lawsuits I quess I would rather support the union UPS drivers again. I have been reading about a lot of problems with FedEx home delivery. Bottom line: FedEx Express is great. FedEx Ground and Home Delivery: Not so much, Take care, Gary (KeysParkPro and ParkPro on EBay)

Actually, Fedex did lose the lawsuit in October or 2007 in California. Each state has it's own suit within which Fedex has appealed. California was a huge precedence.

FedEx-vs UPS

The $7.50 charge is also applicable by UPS -- if you think about it, UPS has been in business many more years and have actually started the standard of some of the additional handling fees that both carriers currently charge!
As for FedEx having Independent contractors vs UPS has employees - FedEx did not lose the lawsuit -- I recommend you continue to follow those facts before you state something that might not be accurate.

Obviously, it's not an individual person that hand scanned your package causing a random and unnecessary upcharge. You probably didn't mean that as that logic is ludicrous, but it appears that is what you're saying. By the same misunderstanding, there is never a charge for simply scanning a label. The fee may have been due to additional handling, such as length or weight restrictions or a shipment not in a corrugated box, though we can't say without that info from you. There may also be a fee if package labels are created under an account with frequent incorrect information, ie: improper weight or size inputs. The fee is for the time spent to correct the errors of package specifications. There are actually people low enough try to cheat a shipper by thinking it's easy to claim a size or weight that is less than the true specs of the package.
I have shipped via all major carriers for almost ten years. All things considered, UPS is the best. Still, if you've shipped with FEDEX for three years, why stop now because of only one gliche?
Keep in mind too that FEDEX Ground and Home Delivery are not done by FEDEX employees. Those delivery guys are self employeed people that are commissioned by FEDEX. There is obviously more protocol errors due to this fact. These independently operated drivers have sued FEDEX and finally won their suit. Once these drivers are on the FEDEX payroll with benefits, the FEDEX rates will be significantly above UPS rates due to the increased FEDEX overhead.
Good luck to you.
