BEWARE of this bank. They will take the largest amount of a transaction coming in & if your only off a penny, they will charge you $37.00. This will then escalted and they will continue to charge for all transactions coming in after that. I was off $.99 cents on my chacking account. This added up to them STEALING $814.00 from my account. I then called the bank and was told they would be happy to refund $37.00 back into my account!!! Out of $814.00???? And there is not a d**n thing you are able to do about it. being a widow and earning $400.00 a week with an $800.00 mortgage, they now have me behind 2 months. All for $.99 cents. Again...BEWARE!!!

Over $800 in overdraft fees means one thing and one thing alone: Continual use of the ATM card and/or the writing of checks WITHOUT having a clue as to how much (of how little) money is in the account.
No, this isn't some grand banking conspiracy! You are NOT keeping a written record of all of your transactions, entering that transaction when it happens, doing the math and then CHECKING TO SEE if you have enough money BEFORE you make another transaction! You have NOT indicated some sort of hacking into your account with someone stealing the money...nor have you indicated some type of mistake on the part of the bank. (If the bank did make a mistake, you wouldn't have a clue about that either because you aren't keeping any records!)
With all of these cry babies and whiners about NSF fees...the bottom line is exactly the same. None of them keep records and all of them blame somebody else rather than look in the mirror. STUPID is the word which defines having a checking account but then not having a single clue as to what the balance is but STILL using the card and then blaming everybody else for their own sorry lack of managing a checking account!
Yes sir, this is America!

You honestly think that banks wait for your account balance to be negative before processing a transaction? That's bank fraud, my friend. Banks must transactions the same business day that they're presented to them.
I wish I could tell if overdrafters actually believe the stuff that they say.

All I'm saying is that 53rd Bank would wait for the largest debit to come in so that they could charge $37.00 for every one after that. There is a class action lawsuit going on so apparently, I'm not the only person in the world who has ever been off $.99 on my account.

.99 or $99.... It doesn't matter. Overdrawn is overdrawn. You admitted fault, so why are you so shocked that you got overdraft fees? The bank didn't STEAL that $814.00 from you; you handed it to them by being negligent.

but..I can not understand how a single "legitimate" overdraft of 99 cents led to $814.00 in fees. This is their policy, granted not near as consumer friendly as the bank I use for 100% free checking (Chase).
"Fifth Third Bank assesses a fee for each item that is presented for
payment while the account is overdrawn plus a daily fee each day the
account is overdrawn. This daily fee is not charged if the negative
balance is eliminated within 3 business days after the day of the
overdraft occurrence."
Now did you sign up for overdraft protection with your checking account debit card? Because due to recent law and regulatory changes..the bank can NOT automatically enroll you in this "service"..you MUST sign up for it. Did you fall sucker and sign up for it?
If you did...you have majorly screwed yourself. As if you had not signed up for this "service" (and I use the term loosely), any point of sale transaction or ATM withdrawal would be declined...hence no fee...and no additional fees due to the banks highest to lowest transaction time manipulating. Yeah..you could face some embarrassment at the Walmart checkout..but you would not be over 800 bucks in the hole right now.
Now this bank is a defendant in a class action lawsuit for the way it manipulates transactions..which is done with malice...and intent, to devastatingly and mercilessly harm it's lowest income and mot financially struggling customers, and to profit for itself (you know a yacht and private jet ain't cheap).
There is a good chance you will get something back...and almost a 100% chance this type of tactic will be put to an end soon..just like it was recently due to a California lawsuit against Wells Fargo for the same shenanigans, where the bank lost. The following banks are currently the defendants in an identical lawsuit, and a few others are under investigation.

While researching to find a better bank..and regardless of ANY bank you chose...simply keep accurate track of the account balance YOURSELF and make sire you are NOT in any type of standard overdraft coverage with your checking account debit card...so you do not give these vultures any more opportunity to bankrupt you into begging on the street for beer money. Because they do not care if that is where you end up..only YOU can determine your own fate.

What did your check register state - oh bet you don't keep one. Newsflash - unless you keep an accurate statement of your finances you will overdraft your account. You cannot rely on online banking or phone balances. Your best bet is to reconcile your monthly bank statement. Stop using your debit card and use cash - I do.
And here come the bank haters.
