I agree that Mary Kay is a rip off. When my consultant had me meet with her director for a practice interview I felt I was not getting out of the room before saying yes to something. I agreed to buy it at my cost. Then the director had me meet with her agian and I don't know how she talked me into it but I bought $1800.00 in product. I was in counseling at this time due to things in my childhhod and even told this to the director in the first interview. Once I got in I did not feel like the person who got me in even wanted to help me now. It felt more like I was competing with her and she didn't want anyone taking away her statis as a number one seller of Mary Kay. If I turned to her for advice or suggetions she would always tell me she pretty much had everyone as her customers in our circle of people we knew. I am just thankfull I did not put this on my credit card. This same consultant and director got alot of people to charge their product on a credit card. When they could not sell the products they were now with a credit card charge and interest on top of it. In fact I think I will tell the other ladies I know who also felt so pressured into it too also make a complaint to rip off. If Mary Kay is such a good comapny and easy to sell why not just let everyone try the $100.00 set up fee. They claim customers don't want to wait for their products but I think people whould be o.k. with it. They also get to claim that Mary Kay is the number one beauty product out their but how much of the product is just sitting in peoples home not being used??? I know of at least 5 people this has also happened to were now their product is just sitting at home collecting dust and interest on thier charge cards. The last straw for me was when the director asked me to share my past abuse in my childhood at one of the meetings. I didn't feel comfortable but she kept pushing so I shared my story with a bunch of strangers. When I meet with my therapist she taught me about setting boundaries and said that I should not have shared this or felt pressured too. My take on Mary Kay now is if you want to be successfull you have to be willing to take advantage of people!!!!!!!!! If your asked to go to a practice interview with a director REFUSE to go!! I will say that my consultant now is a director but at what cost? I don't respect her or turst her anymore. I was told by the director when you get in Mary Kay it is good only to have your friends from Mary Kay. Yea, because no one will want to talk to you after you get them to be a Mary Kay consultant. Pressure them to buy the products. Or worse pressured to put produts on your charge card.

DMGK and/or DeeMarie.   I'm sorry I owe you an apology - not sure my last post got in on time.  I am sorry you lost someone and I think that MK using your emotional state as an opportunity to manipulate you is beyond low.   I think I didn't come across the right way as I recently had to end a 10 year friendship with someone who was always playing the poor pitiful me victim.  I don't think you are in that category at all.   What I was trying - not very well - to get across is really very much the same thing you've been saying.   That this organization is manipulative and not honest.   You had said in your last post you wanted to be happy and for people to like you.   I haven't earned the right to make recommendations but I hope you'll know this is meant in the best of your interests.   I've learned over the years that the best way to do this is to keep a few things in mind (1) the most important - no one is responsible for your happiness but you.  The minute you attempt to rely on others for this you are sure to be dissapointed, (2) if you want to be happy/fullfilled one of the absolute best things you can do for yourself when your down, out of a job, have lost someone close, etc. is volunteer - putting the focus on helping others will make you feel great - trust me on this, (3) show genuine curiosity when meeting others ask them about themselves get them to talk - do this and everyone will want to be around you and you will have more friends than you can imagine.

I hope you are doing well and best of luck to you.

Good on you for your oodles of money, self confidence, and standing up for yourself in the few paragraphs where I should feel like an idiot, and being talked down to.....
I. WAS. MANIPULATED.
MARY. KAY. IS. A. CULT. THAT. BRAINWASHES. MANY. STRONG. AND.WEAK. WOMEN.

oh, yeah, about the money thing. I am independently wealthy, so it was never about money. It was emotional abuse of someone who was shellshocked from trauma.

I am not one of those people that do not take responsibility for my own actions, nor blame others for my misery or pity parties...I wanted to be liked, happy.

Sorry

AUTHOR: Tagurit - (USA)

POSTED: Thursday, January 12, 2012

My sincere apologies for your lose.  I forget that while part of me gets annoyed at people who let themselves get sucked into situations like Mary Kay, the other part of me feels truly sorry for anyone taken advantage of in such a low handed way.   Wondering if there are classes they teach on how to leech onto someone due to their emotional state.    Personnally every one of these gals I have run into comes across as a faketard.  I cannot tell you how many incredibly stupid remarks I have gotten from these people about how much more money I can make, how I can be my own boss, etc. etc.   I have yet to meet a single consultant, director, or anyone for that matter from Mary Kay who makes what I do - not one - ever.   Seriously once they subtract the cost of inventory, their personal expenses, etc. it's a rounding error compared to my current salary and benefits.  That however, has not kept mutiple ones of these pink ladies from trying to convince me to leave my very lucrative career to go sell their crap.

You are responsible for your own decisions

AUTHOR: Tagurit - (USA)

POSTED: Thursday, January 12, 2012

To one of the above posters.  First I do not work for Mary Kay nor am I a Mary Kay consultant.  I have better things to do with my time - namely I'm in technology sales and I make a heck of a lot more than any Mary Kay consultant or director I've ever heard of.

Believe me I absolutely get the process they use to try to suck people in - I saw them try this with one of my friends and that same person tried to get me to join.  But, that doesn't excuse you for taking responsibility for your own emotional state and your own decisions.  No one can MAKE you do something unless you LET them - period.  When the same woman who tried to suck in my friend tried it on me I told her, honey if I want to make more I just work harder at the job I already have - you know the one that actually pays a real 6 digit salary, healthcare benefits, and a 401K.

The latest MK stunt that just sets me off is now they are teaching these women to approach other women while out shopping, etc. and chat them up about how nice they look and ask if they are interested in professional networking.  I had a gal (looked like she was from India) approach me with this line as I was leaving Wal-Mart one evening with my groceries.  She had been eyeing me in the store and only approached me after being prodded by her husband who was with her.  I brushed her off and left.   Seriously I looked like total crap and I know a false compliment when I hear one.  Additionally, I find it just plain silly to think she is "networking" with any businesspeople that are at the level that I am calling on in my current position.   Seriously is she calling on CFOs?   Do any of these people make 250K a year - heck no!!

I was taken advantage of! just like the OP

After I experienced a trauma. My only sibling, my sister at 33 of Pnuemonia. Oh, and the fake people fill a hole and yes,  I had to go to "mandatory meetings" and skin care classes if I wanted to be successful!
Directors in my unit scan the obits and NA and AA meetings for new, vulnerable recruits..........how do you think I was found? Through an OBITUARY!
They may not have held a gun to my head, but the way they act can be very enticing and so so "positive" you feel the need to get prizes by buying loads of inventory! I am not going to go on,  I will wrap it up now... I was used so badly, as w/ all the new IBCs in our unit, being found by an obit or at AA and NA meetings. Enough said. Please don't flame me.

Not Always As It Seems

AUTHOR: JustAGirl - (United States of America)

POSTED: Tuesday, November 29, 2011

To the person above me: Your response smacks of those typically given by a consultant. If you are not one, for your benefit, allow me to point out a few things.

What you see with some directors is not always what you get. They may at first appear to be sweet and kind, but in many cases, the claws eventually come out, and there begins the manipulation, and unfortunately, sometimes outright abuse.  You can find many examples of these cases at Pink Truth.

Unfortunate IBC's are frequently not told that the 90 % buyback is not just for the first year. It is a rolling year. This helps the director avoid a chargeback should the consultant realize that this "opportunity" is not for her. This is only one example of the lies told either by omission or in some cases, outright.

Whether it seems incredulous or not, situations like poster #6's have happened.  Consultants are sometimes told that the meetings are mandatory. They are taught that they have to "show up to go up". When being recruited, a recommendation is often (though not always) made to purchase an inventory, being told that they "can't sell from an empty wagon" . These are only a few examples.

MADE you go to classes - yea right

AUTHOR: Tagurit - (USA)

POSTED: Wednesday, November 16, 2011

Excuse me but message to the last poster.   She "made you go to classes".  She "made you buy the product".   What did she do?  Hold a gun to your head?   You know how to say NO right?   If she charged your credit card without approval why did you not call  your credit card company, cancel the charge, and tell the MK consultant to go jump into the closest lake.    Look I think the whole MK thing is a bunch of malarkie but YOU let YOURSELF get strong armed into this.

The OP is RIGHT about that cult called Mary Kay...

AUTHOR: DeeMarie - (United States of America)

POSTED: Wednesday, October 19, 2011

oh, the recruiter got me and got me good. my sister just passed away and she was on me like white on rice for a year. Then I said ok, I will take the $100 starter.....she took over my laptop and I thought she was all ready then asked for my CC....SHE SPENT 6 GRAND. and she order a lot of foundation and powder that was for dark skin, and nothing for light or fair....
she took advantage and made me go to"classes" to learn how to sell. Yeah, right. all they did was hold hands in a circle and praise the Lord. I am a Catholic, I do it on my special time...I do not appreciate it being shoved down my throat. Then, I was forced to go to this dinner at a hotel and I did, and you know what? My recruiter SCREAMED at me for buying SAMPLES! I guess she did not make a cut out of them! PLUS I GOT A EXTREMELY RACIST VIBE. This chapter or whatever was so racist when the director got her pink caddy she was QUOTED in the newspaper making racist remarks!
Anyhoo, tripled my investment and never spoke with anyone after that dinner where I was publicly humiliated. Racist cult freaks.

We're not all bad, sorry about your experience

I'm so sorry you had a bad experience. Shame on those grown women for taking advantage of you. Just so you know, there are good honest MK consultants/Directors out there. With all of the at home businesses & multi level marketing companies out there, you have to be strong & say no, or you'll get taken every time. Again, so sorry for your experience. Have you called corporate to explain?

I am sorry

I am sorry that that happen to you. I have had nothing but good experiences with Mary Kay. You have to do research on who you are signing up under. My Sales Director is awesome! We have weekly conference calls, success meetings, salad and success, and sometimes my team leader and I go out to get names and numbers together! I tell my sales director what my goals are and she tell me what I could do to meet them. You do know that if you purchase an inventory, you can return it and get 90% of your money back. I am currently building my own team and wouldn't change decision I made.

Bad Experience

AUTHOR: Mk_lady75 - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, October 16, 2007

I am so sorry to hear about your bad experience with Mary Kay. Overall, the company is wonderful. Unfortunately, as with and company or organization, there are a few bad apples in the bunch. I'm sorry you felt pushed into something you didn't want, and I'm especially sorry the person who signed you up with MK and her director were not there to help you in your new journey. Given the proper guidence and leadership, you can turn it into a wonderful opportunity. However, the person on the receiving end (the new consultant) must open up and be willing to learn and take suggestions.

When I first started with MK, I, too felt a bit uneasy. I was in it to help my family. But, given time, I opened my mind and I was able to overcome my objectives and see the positive that can come from the business.

By no means should one ever surround herself (or himself) with people only associated with MK (or any organization). how in the world would you be able to meet new people and potential customers?!? I think the message they were trying to relay (but did so in a poor manner), is that you should surround yourself with positive people. You want to soar with the Eagles; not cluck with the chickens.

One day, I hope you will be able to see the positive the company has to offer, even if you choose not to give it another try. This business is not for everyone, and I respect those who say no just as much as I respect those who give it a try!

Good luck in all your endeavors!

If it's a "Your home Business" type thing you shouldn't have to interview with any one. I work with Beauti Control and the word interview is just not used. I had questions if my recruiter couldn't answer them she asked the director. Since joining I offer any potiental recruits if they would like to go to a unit meeting with me which just lets them know we help each other. Right now one of our ladies is going to be a grandma for the first time, one is getting married and so on.

If you tell the director you are in the business for the discounts she won't mention you trying to sell anything if you don't want to. I have NEVER had any management treat me like i was worth something.

Did they get you to sign up as a consultant and you purchased the inventory? If so, they do have the 90% buy-back guarantee. You can try to return it. Or, if you just purchased $1800 in product, find another consultant to return it for you!
I just signed up for MK a few months ago and I can't stand the business practices, it's horrible.
