NELA rip-off! Seattle Washington

Well, I guess I can add my info to you others. Two years ago, I filed my taxes and got the early pay. About a month later I got a letter that I needed to repay that early pay as my money had been taken by a student loan. I was confused so I called the people who I had gotten my taxes done through, gotten the info they could give me, contacted IRS and got more info and then contacted the state about this loan that I had never had. It is from almost 20 years ago and this is the first I am hearing about it.

I was told that they would look into it and let me know. Well, I forgot about it and then this year, I start getting vicious phone calls from this collection agency as to how they are trying to collect this 7,000 + dollar loan debt and how they were going to take my wages, my car, my home etc. I have explained to them as to how I don't have an outstanding student loan and I have no clue as to what they are talking about. I was called a liar multiple times and when I asked for proof, I was told that I had to provide the proof that they were under no obligation to provide anything but yet they have it all right there. This has been a weekly thing and I still have nothing from them what-so-ever in writing.

Today I received a letter from NELA in the mail telling me that (it looks like a form letter), describing their procedures of taking my tax money etc. Their term for this is offset action. Next paragraph says that they have instructed the Dept. of Education to not do this due to a change in status but it does not state what change.

This is Saturday so of course I can't call them and ask what the hey. The letter is dated May 1, 04 but the envelope was postmarked May 12, 04. I don't know what is up with this company and how they have me owing this but I would like to get to the bottom of it.

I read Carol's letter about her situation and would love to hear about any further happenings. What did the AG do if anything. Please let me know so I can proceed and get this and these rude people out of my life. Thank you~
