This school district and others use a software built in with recruitment bias. Here's the one that I've had the most frustration with:

https://erp.pgcps.org/OA_HTML/OA.jsp?page=/oracle/apps/irc/candidateSelfService/webui/PreviousEmpRegPG&_ri=821&_ti=901433761&oapc=10&OAMC=77262_6_0&menu=Y&oaMenuLevel=1&oas=3JbloG-hlssi1Dn0Cx3QYg..

It's used by Prince George County Public Schools. Like most of these crank Peoplesoft or Jobscore applicant screening software, they do a poor if not biased job of weeding people out. I am beginning to believe that their formulas even allow arcane remote manipulations either by the human resources recruiters, their IT department, the NSA, or Oracle itself. I have submitted at least 10 applications to the PGCPS, MCPS, and others, only to consistently be "overlooked." By degrees and other qualifications, something ought to come up, and at least at DCPS, where things are still done at least partly by hand, they have offered a few interviews. Not at these other places. "Well you don't have a credential," is the immediate flat response from one of these blankety blank checklist persons.

Let's assume I did have that as well as the rest. I have a professional qualification from a previous career, and I KNOW what these games are really all about. Do you know what the result tends to be? It feeds an encephalitic attitude on the part of the professional---which in other words is the beginning---of the end. Oh well, I AM THIS, THEREFORE, I AM. And this is exactly why teaching or any other profession becomes so screwed up. What happened to the days when Erik Erickson could ascend the ranks of teaching by apprenticeship (he only had a high school degree)? What about Henry David Thoreau or Ben Franklin or Helen Keller or Harriet Tubman all these self-made person types? We study them, we idolize them, only to realize that by today's ORACLE JOBSCORE PEOPLESOFT, they would never make it past STEP ONE.

And then, let's say you do make it past step two, the interview stage. Well, at PGCPS or MCS they then ask, well, who do you know? That means you are supposed to get out and meet the future principal who might hire you. But how do you do that in the summer? And I thought it was partly their job to help you connect with the school? They do that at DCPS too, saying, well, you have to know somebody. (They didn't do this so much in California).

But the worst part is even if you have passed step 1, the horrible software; step 2, the basically meaningless foo-foo interview; step 3, "getting to know a few people"; you may not proceed past step 4. Why?

Because many universities, local community colleges, and NGOs such as Teach for America or AVID or JumpStart or Americorps or Reading Partners have already made inroads to many local schools. And THEIR college students and graduates get a better shot at placement than you. Especially if you are older or in some way pegged as odd girl out.

And worse, all the way you get ZERO empathy from the recruiters or school district human resources. To them, you are just a number, a bunch of tag words spat out by Oracle iRecruitment, a living embodiment of data...

And so no wonder the school districts get messed up. They only get what looks good on paper, the one-dimensional Linked-In candidate with the MAT who may or may not be q***r, probably reads only what s/he had to to get by in college, and spends the rest of their time shopping.

Thoreau would be laughed out of the market. Ben might make it in today's small community college. Harriet would be an invisible childcare worker. Helen with today's market would never make it past food vendor. Erickson would be stuck teaching English in a foreign country at best.

Thanks to those one-dimensional software developers at Oracle, Jobscore, Peoplesoft, Irecruitment, Microsoft, and all the rest. Screening people out if they might actually be real, and encouraging fakers.

Anyway, such as how I feel about it, from 6-8 months of participating in the great circus. These darned software are also BIASED if you are in business for yourself! Even if you are a respectable small business owner, time and again, I have noticed that Jobscore, Peoplesoft, and others will put your business at the bottom or not list it at all. And they are also biased based on titles--like they don't like the words "free-lance" or "journalist" or "writer" or "advocate." Apparently these words have absolutely no value in education or any other skill related job. They seem to ignore those words altogether.

So don't study Thoreau, Tubman, Helen, Erickson, MLK, or any of the rest, because they shouldn't have been scratching so hard at night. They should just have been MAT widgets, looking up papers at the library on how to teach, and pedagogical theories, not trying to make anything up. In fact, they would have a better chance of making it past step one if they worked as a cashier at the Home Depot developing customer service skills.

 C'est la vie!
