On July 7th 2008, Special Movers sent 3 men in a Penske Truck to come and pick up my household goods for shipment to California. When I called the office to ask why the Penske truck was being used, I was told that my trailer had broken down and was to be fixed. As to not inconvenience me they decided to come and get my things and take the shipment to New Jersey to be loaded to another trailer. On July 8th I was told that my things weighed 4,820 pounds. This was over 2,340 pounds more than I had (I had done a self move with required weigh tickets in March for the military). I was told that I needed to pay another 1200 dollars to get my things shipped. I asked about coming to get my things because I was told that I would have to be charged 1,000 dollars for the labor that would be involved in a reweigh. I asked that the tickets be sent to me via email and saw nothing that identified that indeed my shipment was being weighed i.e., no order number, no customer name, no truck number. Once I read the federal regulations on reweigh, I called and asked for a re weigh at destination with the intent of paying the 1200 to get the shipment going. I was told that it would be an inconvenience for the driver to have to do that. Then I stated that a back weigh was ok. On July 11, 2008 I was told that the company had discontinued services to California due to the raising diesel fuel prices. The company had cancelled my order and told me that I could pick my things up in North Bergen NJ, 4 hours away from MD. I was told by Rose that the employee would have my paperwork at pick up indicating that a refund was going to be issued on the 23rd of July, instead he had paperwork stating I was being charged for the men coming to Maryland and taking my things to New Jersey, I did not sign it. I weighed my shipment at the same weigh station Special Movers used and it only weighed 2,480 pounds. July 15th 2008, I was told by Michelle that I would not be receiving my deposit of 270.00 and initial payment of 770.00 due to the fact that they had to pay their men. None of the services were performed and I am requesting a refund of 1040.00.
