Special Movers, Inc. from New Jersey quoted a reasonable price for moving furniture and assured us that there would be absolutely no additional charges from the written quote. Everyone was so nice on the phone and returned any calls promptly.

The movers came for pickup as planned and loaded up the furniture using blankets and many rolls of tape. We felt that the furniture was protected nicely. After the furniture was loaded onto the truck, we were presented with a bill for packing supplies. We explained that we were told that we owed nothing even making a call to the company representative for further explanation. It was then that we were told that yes there is a packing fee and they were sorry that it wasn't explained to us in the beginning. We went ahead and paid the additional fee, not happy, but what were we supposed to do. They now had our furniture on the truck.

The company representative told us that our furniture would then be going back to New Jersey but would be leaving that day for the delivery destination. They assured us that our furniture was the only furniture on the truck and would receive special attention. However we received a phone call the next day telling us that they could not move our furniture from their warehouse until we gave then an additional $1000. This money had to be sent immediately by Western Union to the owner if we wished to have our furniture delivered the next day.

We complied once again since they had our furniture and we wished to see it again. We could see now that it was a big rip-off but we were had by now. We had no way of going to New Jersey to pick up our furniture and were were already out $1,000.

Throughout the day of the expected delivery, we were in contact with the company representative assuring us that our furniture was on its way and would be arriving late in the afternoon. Needless to say, it did not arrive. We were left stranded with no furniture and no phone number to contact since the office was closed by now.

Throughout the next day we waited patiently for the delivery and finally received a phone call from the delivery truck stating that it would be another day before it arrived. Explaining that this was not acceptable, they promised that they would try everything to get it there before the end of the day. It arrived at the house at 11:30 pm. It was then explained to us that our furniture left New Jersey after payment of the ransom money. It then went to Atlanta to be picked up by an entirely different shipping company. The new delivery men tried to collect another ransom amount but finally agreed to the amount we owed after they contacted Special Mover, Inc.

If you get a quote from Special Movers, Inc. out of New Jersey, plan on paying at least double to triple your original quote and certainly do not expect to see your furniture on the expected arrival date.

A Fourth Ripped-Off Customer... Attorney involved

AUTHOR: Lia - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, August 12, 2008

I had the exact same thing happen to me. They collected our stuff on August 9, wrapped it in tons of $5 tape, and called to demand $700 more dollars in order to deliver it. I have gotten an attorney and contacted all of the following places with complaints:

BBB, US Attorney General, US Department of Transportation, movers.com, Federal Trade Commission

If you were ripped off by Special Movers, Inc, PLEASE file complaints with all of the above. Maybe enough miserable movers will run these scamers out of business. Respond with any suggestions or questions.
