There was an ad in the newspaper that said a company without a name needed some people to work customer service. When called, the people answered saying, "Ultimate Technologies, we're positive! How may I help you?" When asked about the position, the receptionist simply said that there was no need for experience and to come in and fill out an application and have an interview.
When interviewed, they still refuse to give out any information about the position and say to come in for orientation. When I arrived at the building which had a sign that said 'Mohawk Carpets,' they told me to go on back to a large room where there was a Kirby sitting in the middle. A group of about 20 people sat and watched a demonstration of a Kirby machine.
Finally, after the demonstration was over, the woman told us that the job came with a guaranteed $1600 a month, or $400 a week regardless of whether we sold a Kirby or not. This sounded almost too good to be true. We were then told that we had to do 12 shows a week or 48 a month; this was to be part of our contract.
The woman also went on to tell us that all shows were done by appointment . . . These people had called or written in and had asked for us to come into their homes. Supposedly, there was to be no knocking on doors. We also asked about hours and the woman said we would come in 5 or 6 days a week at 10 am and work no later than 7 pm. Once again, I should have listened to my gut instinct that said this was too good to be true.
Finally, my first day came out in the field. We loaded into a van and the team leader drove us to Wal-Mart where we were to buy some food for the day. We all shopped and when we went to pay, the team leader was in line right in front of us with a bag in one hand and some Mountain Dew in the other. He paid for the Mountain Dew and the cashier kept asking him questions. He handed her the money quickly and left without waiting for his change. She told us that that was the second time that he had stolen like that.
We decided not to say anything and got back in the van. The team leader drove us out into the middle of Greeneville into a trailer park to sell $1800 vacuums. He then told people to get out and knock their way in. They were going door-to-door, there were no appointments. He would then proceed to yell at people if they couldn't get into houses. He told them to just walk in and not even ask.
At this point, I had made my mind up . . . This was not the job for me. I was not going to force my way into someone's home. I then saw that the checks that people had gotten for working were personal checks and no taxes had been taken out. This started to worry me, it seemed like a big scam to me. To top it all off, we didn't get back until around midnight. That was a 14 hour day that since I hadn't sold any Kirbys and anyone else who hadn't sold any was not getting paid for.
I was told that the average week was about 71 hours long. Ouch! That was a big difference from what we had been promised when welcomed into this company. I then sat down and decided to calculate how much these people really should be making since we were told that they make a lot more than minimum wage. If the minimum wage is 5.15 per hour and after 40 hours is time-&-a-half, then they should be making about $445.50 per week. At only a "guaranteed $400/wk," they're not even making minimum wage for the amount of time they put in. One of the checks I saw was for only $200 since they only sold one Kirby the week before which proved that the $1600/$400 guarantee was a lie.

i can understand...they were hard on you....think of it like boot camp...they weed out the weak ones as fast as possible....
i can understand you were misled to a degree maybe about time schedule or something...but if you had any level of brain, you would have asked more questions and drawn clear boundaries before starting....but you sound like you were born yesterday....for one thing you werent actually being employed.... its actually an independent contractor position and just like any other ICP....there is no guaranteed wage for anything... its just a contract that says if you perform 48 qualified demos, youll get paid that 1600 or whatever....which is nothing.... the idea is that by doing 48 legit demos, you are gonna make at least about 2-3 times that much....
heck i made $5500 my first two weeks knocking doors with kirby....
so i would just be thankful for the free training....probly taught you more about business and life than you had ever learned up to that point....
and writing here about a 14 hour day....like as if it was 14 hours of straight work...and so the guy ripped wal mart a little.... BIG DEAL.... way to go....stick up for wal mart which has ruined more small towns and small businesses than id care to mention...
anyways kirbys seem pricey....but ill tell you i really havent seen another vacuum that compares much... dont get me wrong theres a couple of half decent cheapies out there...but ive had my kirby about 8 years...and ive used it for sooooo much i cant explain.... i even ran my own shampoo business with it...charged over $30/ hr.... cuz believe it or not...it does a great job....much better than the high pressure steam....anyways im just saying...one day youll learn what that experience was really about... LIFE! you tried, you were too weak....move on!

First of all, I worked for this company one summer before school started, and I believe the allegations made to be inaccurate. To me, it sounds as if this particular individual misinterpreted everything that was said.
The general reaction when a person is new in the business is much like this one. Most are very skeptical at first.
First of all, I would like to clarify a few things.
In the interview, I myself, asked what exactly the work would entail. I was told that there were various positions available, and that it really just depended on where you fit in. Set up and display, canvassing, and management opportunities were a few.
In the orientation, I CLEARLY remember the lady informing us of the $1600 a month guarantee which "averages to about 400 a week". NEVER did she say we would be payed 400 a week. Of course, you have to listen CAREFULLY. NOBODY is going to PAY you for NOT doing a job, right? I have never heard anything about a weekly 400 dollar paycheck. The way that the 1600 dollar guarantee worked was as follows:
1. You work AT LEAST 5 of the work days.
2. You put on a total of 48 demos in one month.
3. You do AT LEAST 10 demos a WEEK (you can have a bad week or two and make up for it in the next).
4. You do something called an "A to Z" demo, which consisted of showing the machine like they TOLD us to in training (you have to do the job right basically, but you have to do the job RIGHT ANYWHERE you work).
(This stuff basically became a bible to me because I wanted to make sure I knew what I had to do to make my money)
If you did all of these things, not ONLY would you make at LEAST 1600 a month, but you might even make a little more.
The way their payscale worked from what I understood, was like this:
Lets say you sold a total of only 5 Kirbys that whole month and you made about 1000 dollars by the end of the month, BUT you did your 48 demos! Then at the END of the month term, they cut you an ADDITIONAL check for 600 to equal 1600. Make sense? That 1600 has always been there to ensure that if you are going out and doing your job, you will still make some money. You didn't HAVE to sell a single Kirby (which is very unlikely when you do 48 shows) to get this. If you did 48 shows in a month and didn't sell a single one, they would write a check for 1600 dollars (which I have never seen happen with 48 shows).
If you sold around 8 to 10 in the month and made 1600+ on your own, they didn't cut you an ADDITIONAL 1600 check on top of that. Like I said, the 1600 was a guarantee to make sure we at LEAST made that in a month.
As far as the appointment stuff goes, that is what the canvassing department is there for. If they can get enough people to work as canvassers (appointment setters) then you don't have to knock on the doors yourself. Otherwise it is all up to you! And personally, I am somebody that is ready to make money for myself instead of waiting for somebody else to do it for me, so I didn't mind when we didn't use the canvassers.
As far as the hours, some nights we would end up working later than others. If you go out more than once, you will know this. For the most part, we usually worked from about noon (leave the office) to 8pm (drive home).
I don't think it is appropriate for somebody to give a false impression on a company where people are just trying to make an honest living. Maybe you didn't like it, but everyone else did fine.
And also, about the paychecks, all the taxes were done by 1099s which are sent out at the end of the year. So please be assured, everyone pays Uncle Sam!
