Took my truck #4570 to BURFORD DIESEL on July 19th.  We were having turbo issues including no boost and leaking oil.

On July 22nd WILL BURFORD verbally quoted me around $12,000 to fix what you said were bad valve seals on engine.  I told you I had a good donor engine and you gave me the “buddy price” of $5500 also that you would not even charge me for pulling the turbo and diagnostics up to this point.

July 23 I brought over the engine.  I believe Mike unloaded it.

No word until August 16th when I asked how it was going.   You stated that you lost a mechanic and that the engine is dressed out should be completed mid to end of following week.

September 3rd another delay, you reached out if I knew of any mechanics to send your way to help finish my engine.

September 18th you stated truck runs good and will test drive it.

September 23rd you said the ECM was swapped and it has emission codes and then another update on September 26th.  (It did not have this issue when the truck was brought in).  You requested I have the ECM re-flashed and it would likely fix the issue.

September 27th you quoted me $3000 to have it re-flashed.   I told you it was about $800-1200 in Chicago.  My driver has been waiting to get back to work and it has been way too long, need him running asap.

October 1st, you text that these codes must have been in the truck prior to you working on it.  Also the truck will only drive 55mph as it is derating due to the code.  A new development according to my driver.  Never had that issue.

October 3rd, I get the invoice emailed from the office for $6500.  I pointed out your text quote reminder from well over 75 days prior.  You stated that the codes said no communication with the acm module.  You agreed that I should take it to another shop cause you were at a loss of what to do.

October 7th  I paid for the truck and had it driven to Chicago.

October 8th I reached out to you about the wiring harness.  The ECM could not be re-flashed as the harness had issues.  The shop was requesting time to diagnose the issue.   When I reached out to you about the harness issue being crushed and or missing parts and pieces your idea was for me to bring the truck back to your shop.  You stated it would sit for a WEEK before you could get it back in to hopefully fix the harness.  The current work must have been more important than this now going on 3 months.

October 10th I delivered the original engine up to the shop in Chicago.  Turns out the original harness was still on engine and was not swapped as it should have been and stayed with the original truck/chassis.  I am not a mechanic but I have been told numerous times that the original harness should always be used when engine swapping.   Also the original harness was cut and had to be mended.  The shop in Chicago had around 40 hours on this diagnosis and repair.   There were different type plug in ends on the two harness’s.  The complete harness had to be taken off original engine and then installed on donor engine while it was in the truck.

October 14th I stopped in at Truck Pro Service and talked to Nathen.   Nathen knew this job well and filled me in on many things.  One of the issues is that he believed the valve seals were just fine and that possibly it just needed a head gasket.  He also stated that he requested to swap the original harness but you over ruled his decision.

October 22nd I emailed over the invoice for getting this engine fixed in Chicago.  You stated you should not be on the hook for all of the repairs.  You said I got hosed and ripped off.  The Chicago shop also stated that the air filter housing had 3 of 4 broken mounting bolts.   Since they have the original engine and It is not worth me going back to get it, I had them diagnose and tear into it.  In exchange I would let them keep the engine core.  They found that the valve seals looked fine and also let me know, had they been bad the truck would have smoked.  The truck did not smoke, it was just leaking oil and had no boost.  Turns out that it needed to have the turbo intake pipe and V pod air control valve replaced.  It was likely that this was the original problem from the start.  Even with the new engine it lost boost and was leaking oil within an hour out on the road.  Once those parts were replaced it was good to go.

October 17th I asked where the original turbo was.  You stated it was roached and in very bad condition and different vgt actuators were used.  It was no good.  After realizing that I was persistent about getting it back, mysteriously it appeared and had nothing wrong with the turbo at all.

July 19th truck dropped off and finally fixed on October 18th.   Three months to fix a truck and around $12,000 dollars in repairs plus a $14,000 engine and I also lost an engine core.   Down time cost me much much more than that.  Had this been diagnosed correctly it would have been fixed in one day and cost around $1000-$2000.

At this point I am requesting you return the $5500 I paid you to have the engine swapped.  Consider it a costly lesson of what not to do.  I certainly have learned my self and am continuing to do so.  Things are tight we both know this and are feeling the pain, all the more reason none of this should have ever taken place.  I am happy to work out a payment arrangement so long as I get this refund in a timely fashion.
