Do not rent from the hucksters at Hertz Dollar Rent-a-Car, or you will be left stranded or worse if their vehicles fail on the highway!! And after the worst car rental experience of your life, they will accuse you of not returning the vehicle. They also use the names: Thrifty Car Rental and Firefly. I received a defective vehicle from Hertz Dollar rent-a-car. The front driver's side tire went flat. The tire had almost zero tread and appeared to be dry rotted. There were no tools and no spare tire to change the flat. I have plenty of pictures. I called around 11:00 AM to report the issue with the car. I was told at that time that they were sending a replacement car and would tow the defective vehicle. When I called 2.5 hours later to check on the status they said that they had no report on the vehicle. The employee kept me on the phone for close to half an hour, jerking me around, not solving my problem and not getting me a replacement vehicle. She was saying things like I would have to wait for a tow truck, then ride with the driver and possibly get a replacement car at the location that tow truck took us. I finally said look, you've wasted enough of my time. The car is your problem now. It is located at.... Come and get it NOW. The keys are on the front seat. You must come and get it immediately because the owner cannot spare the parking space. They finally sent a tow truck to retrieve their defective vehicle, but they left me totally stranded without a replacement vehicle. After this unbelievable hassle, Hertz Dollar contacted me daily by phone until I blocked their number, saying that I had not returned their defective vehicle, which they towed to the Manchester, NH airport on October 12. They also contacted me by U.S. mail today, 19 days after they towed the car, to deliver the message that they did not know that they have their own vehicle and they think that I am still in possession of the car. When I contacted Kathy at Hertz Dollar Rent-a-Car in OK City, OK, on October 31st, aside from keeping me on hold for 30 minutes or so, she said that my contract was closed and that she pinged the car and found that it was located at a maintenance facility at the Manchester, NH airport. So this incompetent company does not even know that they have their car in their possession. They continue to harass me, despite the fact that it is apparently not hard to find the car or to see that my contract is closed. Aside from a receipt, they refused to send me any proof that I could use to demonstrate that I do not have possession of their dangerously defective vehicle. They have possession of it and they know it. NOTE: I got this rental through Priceline: https://www.priceline.com/rentalcars/ , who were no help at all in resolving the problems.

Hertz will pay $168 million to customers it falsely accused of stealing its cars

AUTHOR: Lana - (United States)

POSTED: Thursday, November 02, 2023

For years, the rental car company Hertz falsely accused hundreds of innocent customers of stealing its vehicles — accusations that, for some customers, resulted in arrests, felony charges and jail time.

Now, the company will pay $168 million to settle those claims, Hertz announced Monday: https://www.npr.org/2022/12/06/1140998674/hertz-false-accusation-stealing-cars-settlement

From the article: "In total, the settlement will cover 364 people falsely accused of car theft...And a Mississippi man spent more than 6 months in jail after Hertz reported his rental car stolen; he had returned it and paid in full, but the company had failed to inform prosecutors, he said in his suit. He missed a hearing date and was incarcerated for months, the suit states."

Tires were bald and dry rotted

AUTHOR: Lana - (United States)

In response to this comment: " Dangerously defective vehicle? Because you got a flat tire? Here's a hint, you got a flat tire because you ran over something. It's not a problem with the car. If the tires were in such bad shape, why did you accept the car in the first place? And you can't just abandon the car somewhere and tell them to come and get it. That's not how these things work. They probably reported it stolen at this point, and you might actually have a warrant out. Have fun sorting it out."

The tire was bald and dry rotted. I got the car in the dark and never had any idea that a company would rent a car with bad tires. Hertz will pay $168 million to customers it falsely accused of stealing its cars, hundreds of whom were falsely arrested and jailed, some for up to 6 months:

Here's a hint for you: mind your own business.
