I brought my car to a reputable body shop to fix some minor problems. While the car was at the body shop, they detected a leak in the radiator. I asked the body shop if he knew anybody who could repair or replace the radiator. He came up with a recommendation of a shop a couple of miles away. The body shop even offered to bring the car to the Service Shop for me when he was ready. The body shop and the mechanic communicated and decided it was best to leave the hood & grill off as it would be easier & less expensive to replace the radiator.

The car was brought to the mechanic by the Body Shop and everything seemed good. I drove to the Mechanics shop and met the owner who was very helpful. He suggested rather than just replace the radiator with the same radiator that failed he suggested having a custom radiator built that was far better than a stock one. The custom radiator was a few hundred dollars more but, I agreed a little extra money was worth it & that the car would be worry free in the hot weather.

3 Weeks later the radiator arrived at the shop and the owner called to tell me it was in his possession. I was happy. The radiator was installed and the mechanic told me the car will never overheat and ran very cool. While other mechanical items were being done on the car the mechanic called me and said we have a problem :-o. The radiator needed to be relocated 2" down because the Custom radiator was larger than the original radiator, so the grill & hood could not be installed. I asked what it was going to take to lower the radiator? The mechanic said a couple of hours work. I chuckled and said OK we’ll call it a day’s work, go ahead. What was I going to say?

I randomly stopped by the shop a couple days later and I saw one of the workers from the body shop working on my car. I asked why he was here at the mechanics shop working on my car and I was told he is helping the mechanic position the radiator so the hood & grill will fit properly. A week later the mechanic told me the radiator was all set and the car was going to the body shop to put the Hood & Grill back together. That same day, I received an invoice for $1300 from the mechanic to remove and relocate the grill and could I get payment to him ASAP.

I was not happy and I had a long discussion why I should not pay to relocate the radiator that was ordered by the mechanic and installed wrong. The mechanic said Hey, I ordered the radiator for your car and this is what I received. I did not have the Grill & Hood to double check the fitment so, I installed the radiator. I told him I should not have to pay $1300 for an error made by you and the manufacturer of the radiator. I did pay the bill as I should. The car was then sent back by the mechanic to the Body Shop for finish assembly of the original project. Another week goes by and I received a call from the body shop that the car is all set. I replied, Thank You and send the invoice initial project of installing the Hood & Grill.

Well, I received a bill from the Body shop for $7,400 (4,000 of which) to rework the grill and hood so it would close due to the radiator was too big. This extra work was unbeknown to me and I was never aware extra work to retrofit the grill and hood was in progress. I had a long discussion with the Mechanic and he repeatedly refused to take any monetary responsibility for the incorrect radiator & installation. After a few days of debating whose responsibility it was he offered to wave the $1300 relocation of the radiator.

I paid my bills as a good customer and have not seen any money returned to date. In the meantime, I owed & paid the Body shop $7400 of which he admitted approximately $4,000 was the cost for the extra work due to the radiator. Please get back to me with some advice as to how I go about getting refunded for extra work that was not my fault nor was given any permission by me to proceed.
