I’m sharing this report in the hope that no one else has to go through what my family and I have endured with Kia. Our 2016 Kia Sedona’s engine seized at 86,429 miles, despite us never receiving an oil pressure warning light. The experience has been devastating both financially and emotionally.
Here’s what happened:
- We purchased our Kia Sedona in December 2019 with 41,012 miles.
- In February 2024, at 69,509 miles, the oil pressure switch was replaced under warranty.
- In November 2024, at 86,429 miles, the engine completely seized. Shockingly, the oil pressure warning light never illuminated to alert us of any issues.
Despite Kia’s extended warranty for the oil pressure switch (covering 15 years/150,000 miles), they have refused to honor it, claiming that the engine failure was unrelated to the oil pressure switch. However, Kia has failed to provide a transparent or detailed diagnostic report to substantiate this denial.
The Impact on Our Family:
We are a family of seven, including a child with Down syndrome. Reliable transportation is not just a convenience for us—it’s a necessity for our daily lives, from commuting to work to attending medical appointments. With Kia refusing to take responsibility, we were forced to take out a high-interest loan to purchase a replacement vehicle—a financial burden we were unprepared for.
Adding Insult to Injury:
What frustrates us even more is hearing ads for lifetime warranties from Kia dealerships. While Kia is busy promoting new sales, they seem to have forgotten about loyal customers like us. Their lack of accountability and refusal to honor their promises has been heartbreaking and disappointing.
My Demands:
I urge Kia to:
- Provide a detailed diagnostic report justifying their decision.
- Take responsibility and honor their warranty commitment.
If you’re considering purchasing a Kia, I recommend proceeding with caution. Their warranty promises seem strong at first glance, but when it comes time to rely on them, you may find yourself left out in the cold—just like we were.
Has anyone else experienced a similar issue with Kia? Let’s start a conversation and hold them accountable.

Seeking Answers and Accountability for Kia's Warranty Denial

Thank you for your questions, Irv. Let me address them one by one to provide clarity:
1. Engine Oil Checks: I checked the engine oil levels regularly. As a habit, I performed checks during every oil change and periodically in between to ensure proper maintenance. I did not notice any significant drops in oil levels before the engine seized.
2. Oil Changes: I adhered to Kia's recommended maintenance schedule for oil and filter changes, utilizing professional service providers to ensure the work was done correctly. My records confirm these were completed on time.
3. Climate: The car was primarily used in the Midwest (Kansas), where the climate varies from hot summers to cold winters. Nothing extreme that would typically put undue stress on the engine beyond normal conditions.
4. Oil Type: I used the recommended oil type specified in the owner's manual, ensuring it met Kia's standards for the 3.3L GDI engine.
5. Oil Light Perception: The oil light, in my understanding, indicates a drop in oil pressure, which could signal a significant issue requiring immediate attention. However, the light never illuminated before or during the failure, leaving no warning of impending engine issues.
6. Coolant Flush: The coolant was last flushed during a routine maintenance visit, though I would need to reference my service records for the exact date. The engine did not overheat before seizing, which was confirmed by the lack of dashboard warnings and a functional cooling system.
7. Kia’s Diagnostic Claim: Kia denied the warranty claim, stating the engine failure was not related to the oil pressure switch. However, they have not provided a detailed diagnostic report explaining what caused the seizure, leaving the true cause unresolved. I have repeatedly asked for this report but have not received a satisfactory explanation.
This situation has been frustrating, especially with no warning signs or transparency from Kia. If you or anyone else has experienced similar issues or advice on further steps, I would appreciate your input.

When did YOU last check the engine oil? How often do YOU check the engine oil? How often do you change the oil and filter? In what climate is the car being used? What kind of oil do you use? On another matter...what is your perception of what that oil light is indicating when it is "on"? On still another matter....when was the last time you had a coolant flush? Did the engine over heat before it seized? We all know warranty companies will go to great lengths to come up with any excuse to deny a claim. When they said the seizure was not related to that switch, what did they say caused it?
