I don't know how this company is still around!

I purchased an extended warranty for a used Mack that I purchased from a used Mack truck dealer. It was administered by National Truck Protection. My salesman assured me that i was buying the "best" warranty out there, that it was better than all the other used truck warranties. I was persuaded, and I paid over $6,300 for the a 1 year warranty from NTP.

About a month after buying the warranty, my engine made noise and it shut down. I called NTP to file a claim in the middle of the night because they're warranty states that I must call them first before starting any repair, otherwise they will deny the claim. The warranty also states that they are available 24/7 which is a lie. When I called, the lady who answered the phone had no clue about trucks and she forwarded me to a voicemail. She told me to leave a message with my information and that someone from NTP would call me back.

No one called me back.

The next day, after I had my truck towed to a reputable shop, I called NTP again. Right from the beginning, the claims person gave me attitude and asked me questions like, "this truck only as a few thousand miles on it since the warranty started, how is it that the engine failed already?" Or, "why didn't you call us before taking your truck to a shop? You were supposed to take your truck to a dealer."

I told the person that I called and left a message but he didn't want to believe me and told me that if I didn't take my truck to a dealer, they wouldn't pay for anything. I had to pay a tow truck again to take my truck to a Mack dealer.

After sitting for 4 days, the dealer finally started diagnosing my truck. A day later, I was told that a "bull gear" came loose and caused gear train damage. The transmission would need to come down for the repair and a lot of engine parts would need to be changed.

I called NTP and explained the situation. I was told that I needed to "authorize diagnostic time" so that NTP could know the root cause of failure and that I had to pay for all diagnostic time (8 hours at $130/hr). I told the claims person that I needed to know if the failure was covered before I authorized diagnostic time because I can't afford to be throwing my money away at a dealer.

I was told that the engine gears are covered but that they need a "root cause of failure first."

I had to write a check for the diagnostic time. The dealer came back saying that the bearings in the bull gear came loose because the retainer backed off. I called NTP once again to explain that the failure and was told that this failure is not covered because "mounting hardware is exluded from coverage."

At this point I was livid! I simply could not believe that I had been taken for a fool by my salesman and this company.

When I asked to speak with a supervisor, I was forwared to someones voicemail and never heard back from anyone.

My advice to anyone considering buying an extended warranty from NTP is to stay away. Word in the industry is that NTP and Premium 2000 are the same company. So if you think you are buying from the competition with one or the other, you are not afford the $20,000 repair.

In the end, I had to give up the truck because I could not afford the
