I learned of a place called the Recovery Cafe in DownTown Seattle that served free lunch to the homeless. I decided to visit this place to see if I could volunteer. I was offered a meal to go, and figured I would look at the food before expressing my interest. I observed a can of PineApple juice, on 7-12-20, that had expired in 2018 in the bag that had just been handed to me. Among other items I dug through, I found that every single item in the bag was past expiration.

Goldfish, access date 7-12-20 expired 9/17/2018. I saw some Tim's Cascade Chips, bag opened. They had expired 4 months prior. I continued to visit this venue silently throughout 2020 and into early 2021. Asking for a meal several times per week, just to see if there was ever a time when the food was safely edible. There was not a single instance, other than canned seltzer, that was actually safely edible.  I received pastries that had active mold spores larger than a quarter inside of them.

I observed fruit that had been peel-punctured and was rotting on the inside. I even saw d**k's burgers crumbled into the shape of a baseball and thrown into the bag being served in direct violation of King County's health standards. They were comfortably in the temperature 'danger zone' each time I handled them. It seems extremely insensitive to trouble people who are already struggling to stay safe, with the extreme dangers of eating expired food. Eating expired food can lead to neurological damage and even infections serious enough to warrant amputation of limbs.

I never approached management at this establishment directly because it is very evident that they are only in it to funnel corporate money into the hands of their stakeholders. Local residents donate their money here thinking they are helping their homeless neighbors. Organizations like this view the homeless as a manageable burden, and marginalize them until they commit suicide.

Human residents of Seattle understand that these people are subject to unscrupulous manipulation and donate their money here to try and alleviate the problem. Recovery Cafe and Share Wheel are happy to call grocery stores and help them save on their garbage haul away costs, then they provide that garbage to people that they have deemed must be worthy of eating garbage.
