Horrible Experience! Fraudulent! Rev. John E. Guns. Virginia Union University does not take student concerns seriously—calls are ignored, students are rudely dismissed, and they are charged thousands of dollars for books that are never provided. Each term, students are billed $2,800 or more for books alone. The school’s online systems are severely outdated. The Canvas student portal contains broken links that make it nearly impossible to access research materials and other essential academic resources. Virginia Union University has become increasingly focused on social influencers, content creators, notable pastors, and artists—offering them tuition-free degrees.

It’s not about education anymore. It’s about money, notoriety, enrollment numbers, and flashy events, all while academic systems and teaching practices (among some professors) remain outdated and poorly managed.

Alarming concerns include: * Stolen scholarship funds: Money promised to students—both at the university and the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology—has mysteriously gone missing.

* Overloaded faculty: Professors are expected to teach classes with 40–50 students without any advance notice.

* Incompetent administration: The administrative staff often act indifferent and will stop assisting students at will. If they don’t feel like helping, they simply won’t—and there’s no accountability. Many staff and advisors know they’re protected by tenure or job security and behave accordingly.

* Students or returning advance degree seeking students are just happy to gain a degree from an HBCU that’s known for being a liberating institution.

Yet, the school isn’t practicing what it preaches, other than teaching black folks how to preach to black folks. Oppression! If you’re considering this school, stay away. The leadership is questionable at best. Individuals such as Hakim J. Lucas, Pastor/Bishop Dr. John Gunns, Rev. K’hari P. Jackson, and Rev. Carla E. Lightfoot have all been involved in scandalous and misleading practices.
